Here are a few Topeka guards who might be in line for bigger roles next fall (in alphabetical order):
Quentin Adams, 5-foot-8, 2023, United Basketball, Highland Park HS:
The super-quick lefthander is unaffected by on-ball pressure. He plays the game at top speed and is able to get shots on his own. He draws a lot of fouls going to the goal. This summer he’s showing off a pull-up jumper on the move and a lot of anticipation at the defensive end. Adams brings a burst of energy when he comes on the floor.
Pearse Bowen, 5-foot-10, 2023, Kansas 94×50 Elite, Washburn Rural HS (pictured):
Bowen may have a shot at playing time for the Junior Blues, who were dealt heavy losses by graduation. A point guard who is used to having the ball in his hands, directing and offense and handling pressure are his strengths. He’s a quick and physical guard who is the primary point guard for 94×50 Elite.
Carmelo Foy, 5-foot-10, 2023, United Basketball, Topeka West HS:
Getting playing time at Topeka West is always difficult. But they do graduate some guards and will offer some opportunities to JV players to move up. Foy is a tough battler for rebounds, showing some nice elevation. His combination of physicality and ball-handling skill may play well for the Chargers.
Jaden Mosqueda, 5-foot-10, 2023, Kansas 94×50 Elite, Topeka West HS:
Mosqueda is a big guard who uses his strength and size to penetrate, back down defenders or hold them off the ball. Mosqueda can rebound for his size, and he’s steady with the ball from end to end.
Chase Thompson, 5-foot-10, 2024, Kansas 94×50 Elite, Topeka West HS:
Thompson is showing off a lot of diverse skills this summer. He can get hot from deep and knock down 3-pointers in bunches. But he can also put the ball on the floor and get into the lane. On the drive he can finish or kick out to open shooters. Defensively, he is an athletic and pesky on-ball defender.
Alex Valdivia, 5-foot-10, 2023, Kansas 94×50 Elite, Shawnee Heights HS:
Valdivia is a good athlete and standout golfer. On the basketball court, he’s a hustler and an efficient guard. He can shoot from the mid-range and has a nice stroke from deep. He pushes to move the ball quickly and occasionally penetrates. Above all, Valdivia is a gritty guard, always on the floor and in the mix for rebounds. He makes plays with his anticipation at the defensive end.
