It can be tough for a sophomore to get a lot of playing time at the varsity level, but some guys from the class of 2024 are showing they might just be ready.
Here are a few 2024 wings and posts from the area around the KC who might be in line for some playing time next fall (in alphabetical order):
Mark Debiak, 6-foot-3 forward, 2004, KC Spurs, Spring Hill HS:
Debiak is preparing for varsity action by playing up this summer with the KC Spurs 2023 club. He’s a long, physical post player who has a variety of moves in the lane. He goes to the goal with aggressiveness and power. Debiak is pretty well developed physically for a rising sophomore, and holds his own against older big men.
Blake Kilian Blake Kilian 6'6" | SF Blue Valley West | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, 2024, KC Spurs, Silver, Blue Valley West HS:
Kilian is a well-built and athletic post player who gets after the offensive and defensive glass. He’s athletic and runs the floor, handles the ball, and moves well around the lane for the 2024 Spurs.
Jaxon Klein Jaxon Klein 6'6" | SF Blue Valley Northwest | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-5 forward, KC Spurs Black, Blue Valley Northwest HS:
Klein goes 100 mph all over the floor, attacking with the ball and hustling without. He hits the deck willingly to make plays, driving to the goal with abandon and going after loose balls. Klein is one of those special players who rips down rebounds and turns the ball up floor. His quickness, explosiveness and length make him a threat to go end to end and finish at the rim.
Austin O’Gorman, 6-foot-2 forward, 2004, KC Spurs, Olathe South HS:
O’Gorman is an athletic wing who moves well without the ball and gets in position to catch and score cutting through traffic. He has good length and the physicality to be a tough defender in the lane or on the perimeter. He’s playing up and acquitting himself nicely.
Dylan Parkhurst, 6-foot-2 forward, 2024, United Basketball, Shawnee Mission West:
Parkhurst is doing a nice job playing up against 2023 competition this summer. He’s a long wing with some guard skills. He’s creative with the ball and plays with high IQ. He’s got midrange scoring ability and can knock down the deep ball.
Nick Van Denter, 6-foot-2 forward, 2024, United Basketball, Shawnee Mission West:
A long wing who can do a lot of things on the offensive end, Van Denter is playing up successfully this summer. He can shoot from deep, make jumpers in the midrange, and is a quality passer off the dribble. He runs the court and cleans up misses in transition and in traffic in the half-court set.
