It can be tough for a sophomore to get a lot of playing time at the varsity level, but some guards from the class of 2024 are showing they might just be ready.
Here are a few 2024 guards from the area around the KC who might be in line for some playing time next fall (in alphabetical order):
Devon Bolton, 6-foot guard, 2024, United Basketball, Shawnee Mission Northwest HS:
Bolton is a blur with the ball, getting to the goal seemingly at will. He is a top-notch ball handler who can get his own shot at every level. Bolton can still sharpen up his distribution and quarterbacking skills to become a top point guard. But the tools are there, and man can he attack the goal. His physical talent and aggressiveness makes him dangerous at the defensive end, too.
David Cobin, 5-foot-8 guard, 2024, KC Spurs Black, Desoto HS (pictured):
Cobin is an attacking point guard who can shoot from deep. He’s got court awareness and the ability to find open shooters. Cobin is a tough, physical guard who puts his shoulder down and attacks defenders to get to the hole. He’s got quick hands and causes a lot of problems at the defensive end.
Josiah Polynice, 6-foot guard, 2024, KC Spurs Silver, Olathe South HS:
Polynice is a smooth ball handler who is under control at top speed. He takes care of the ball and gets it to open teammates off drives. By attacking the lane, he gets a lot of midrange shots and draws a lot of fouls. A physical and tough guard, Polynice is a tough on-ball defender who makes interceptions thanks to his quickness and anticipation.
Tyjuan Porter, 5-foot-7 guard, 2004, KC Spurs, Olathe North HS:
Porter is playing up this summer and is a bulldog at the point for the KC Spurs 2023 club. He is physical and doesn’t let attacking on-ball defenders get the best of him. He is not intimidated by taller defenders and goes right after them. He isn’t all about scoring. He looks up court, distributes and focuses on getting the team into a good offensive rhythm.
Davion Winton, 5-foot-7 guard, 2004, KC Spurs, Lansing HS:
Very similar to Porter, Winton is playing up for the Spurs 2023 club. He is a solidly built, attacking guard who makes rugged plays in traffic. He draws defenders and dishes, or gets shots off the dribble. He’s a nice ball handler and defends bigger guards with intensity and quickness.
