The athletic 6-foot-7, 190-pound swingman known in Portland as “Mookie” has certainly received the attention of college coaches from across the country and he recently made his first unofficial visit. In the meantime, he’s been trying to get Jefferson back on the winning track as the Demos have sailed some rough waters as of late.
After coming into the game having lost three of their last four games, Jefferson was able to bounce back with a 85-70 win at Milwaukie. “We’ve been talking about staying together, playing together, and playing hard the whole game starting for the beginning,” Cook said. “I’ve been trying to be vocal and communicating in a calming manner so that everyone understands.”
Cook posted totals of 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists – an all-around game that has been pretty standard for him this season. Recently named the #3 player nationally in the Class of 2023, Cook has been on the radar of college coaches for quite some time. On Tuesday, Division I coaches could contact him directly for the first time so you can imagine what it was like for him.
“It was definitely crazy and my phone was blowing up,” Cook said. “It was a blessing because not everybody can say that they have this, have the chance to talk to a lot of college coaches. I talked to Memphis, Coach Cal (Kentucky), Duke, pretty much all of the Pac-12. They’ve all pretty much been telling me that I’m on their radar and hopefully one day I’ll get an offer from them.”
Already coming into the week with several high-major offers, Cook collected some more on Tuesday from Memphis, Texas Tech, USC, and UCLA. He’s keeping everything open with his recruitment but did take some time out recently to take his first unofficial visit to the University of Oregon, which was one of the first schools to offer him a scholarship.
“They made me feel at home,” Cook said. “It’s obviously a great place to be and to get better at.”
There’s obviously no rush for Cook to make any decisions and he noted that he’s really looking forward to the Peach Jam this summer to really open coaches eyes and earn even more offers. For now though, there are still games left to play in a Demos uniform – starting with Friday night in the PIL rematch against Grant.
“It’s always going to be a big rivalry game,” Cook said. “We’ve just got to come out and be ready to compete all four quarters.”
Cook currently ranks as the #1 ranked player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
