The high-flying 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard came into the year a bit of a mystery as he transferred into Westside Christian after playing JV last year at Mountainside. But clips of his dunking exploits started making the rounds on social media but it was his overall game that was in full effect as it helped the Eagles unseat De La Salle Catholic as Lewis & Clark league champs with a big win on Monday afternoon.
“That was the biggest game of our year,” Ye said. “We knew coming into the game they were a tough team so we knew we had to bring it. We came out and showed what we can do. Part of it was just coming in and being aggressive and trying to match their energy. We wanted to bring more energy to the table than they could handle.”
Ye played a major part in the game, as he has all season long. The lefty knocked down some big threes and was flying all over the place both in transition and on defense. He finished the game with team highs with 16 points and nine rebounds, all indicative of the work he’s put in both pre-season and during this school year.
“I feel like I’ve come a long way,” Ye said. “At first I was kind of timid with my shots, but my coaches put in a lot of work with me and made me the player I am today and more confident. I definitely want to keep working on bringing the ball up and being a smarter passer.”
Playing at the next stage has always been a dream for Ye and he’s hopeful that all the time and effort he’s put in combined with his natural efforts will result in an opportunity to play at the college game’s highest level.
“I’m just excited for next year to see what happens,” Ye said. “Definitely D-I is the ultimate goal but if not, then I’ll see where it takes me from there. I just want people that I can get along with and work with as a team. Definitely people that can help me get better as a player and make my team better.”
While playing with a team in July will help out in those endeavors, there are still games to be played this year. Westside Christian will head to Coos Bay for the 3A culminating week event and Ye is expecting nothing less than the Eagles coming home with a souvenir.
“I think we’re going to win out,” Ye said. “I’m excited to see what happens and hopefully we get to cut the nets down at the end of the year.”
Ye is not currently ranked in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings but will be added in the next update.
