Continue ReadingThe Philly High School Live sessions have become one of the most anticipated events of the annual June recruiting period. As the basketball world comes out the Covid pandemic and returns to in-person recruiting, that anticipation was multiplied tenfold here in June 2021.
Organized by John Mosco (Archbishop Wood Head Coach) and Andre Noble (Imhotep Charter Head Coach) Philly HS Live once again featured a field that is absolutely stacked with talented prospects
Below is a review of the Philly HS Live (Session II) event with a focus on southeastern Pennsylvania prospects who played well.
Dylan Blair Dylan Blair 5'10" | PG Downingtown West | 2023 State PA – 5’11” / Junior / Downingtown West / Combo Guard: To be honest there isn’t much this electric point guard can’t do on a basketball court. He’s a nearly complete player at both ends of the floor. As a bonus to his polished skill set, Blair owns a high basketball IQ, a relentless motor and plays an unselfish style of lead guard. Blair’s entire skill set was on display when he recorded 22 points vs. Potomac (MD). In July he will play for Philly Pride 16U and we expect that he will pull in a number of offers.
Chase Coleman Chase Coleman 6'2" | PG Rocktop Academy | 2024 PA – 6’2” / Sophomore / Archbishop Carroll / Combo Guard: A starter last winter for Carroll’s varsity team, Coleman can score from anywhere on the court. This weekend attacked the basket with his downhill style of play. If the defense was somehow able to wall of the paint, Coleman simply hit jumpers from behind the arc. Coleman rebounds very well for a guard (8 rebounds in win over Executive Charter Academy) and his on-ball defense is a real problem for opposing players. One of the intangibles of Coleman’s game that jumps out at you is the competitive fire and positive energy he brings to the floor.
Blake Deegan – 6’5” / Junior / Archbishop Carroll / Wing: Deegan’s reputation as a talented perimeter shooter proceeds him. In addition to his shooting, this weekend Deegan displayed excellent court vision and the much sought after team first mentality. When he is looking to score, he can do so via the stop-n-pop 3PA, or out of pick-n-roll / pick-n-pop action. Deegan owns very good instincts for the game. Specifically, his feel for when to seal his man after he sets a pick and then roll to the hoop vs. when to pop out to the 3-point line for an open trey is something you can’t teach.
Kobe Magee Kobe Magee 6'4" | SG Executive Education | 2022 State PA – 6’5” / Senior / Executive Education Charter / Shooting Guard: On Friday and Saturday Magee’s games drew significant attention from college coaches and it’s easy to see why. Magee is a tall, long, athletic and muscular guard prospect who plays with a great deal of energy and hustle. His dribbling skills slice up defenses and once he is at the rim, his build allows him to play through contact to score the ball. Magee can also use his smooth handles to create separation for a step-back 3PA. HIs stellar play at Philly HS Live (Session II) produced an offer from Drexel. Magee is a prospect to keep an eye on this July.
Daniel Skillings Daniel Skillings 6'5" | SG Roman Catholic | 2022 State PA – 6’5” / Senior / Roman Catholic / Wing: Skillings used the Philly HS Live sessions as his own personal launch party. He absolutely crushed Session I and that high level of play continued at Session II. Thus he was a topic of conversation on the sidelines again this weekend. Skillings is a prospect who can flat out get buckets at all 3 levels. He proved that again yet again this weekend by hanging 28 points (14 boards as well) on DJ Wagner and Camden. A versatile, athletic and very skilled wing, Skillings game appears to be effortless. Skillings holds offers from local school Temple and Drexel. In the last week he picked up offers from VCU, Towson, UMass, URI and Hofstra.
Thomas Sorber – 6’10” / Sophomore / Archbishop Ryan / Power Forward: One could argue that Sorber was the “big” who stock rose the most over this event as he was simply unstoppable at times. He owns a wingspan longer than 6’9” and large hands, so Sorber (formerly of Trenton Catholic Academy in NJ) catches everything that is thrown to him. Once he has received the rock, Sorber can absorb contact and finish at the rim. Sorber establishes position on the low blocks well and can then score with his back to the basket. He has also displayed has range on his jumper out to 3-point line. At the other end of the floor, Sorber contests shots well. At the Philly HS Live (Session II) tournament, Sorber registered two double-doubles — 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds vs. Downingtown West (PA) as well as 18 & 10 against Bergen Catholic (NJ).
