Dinos Trigonis attracted some of the top prospects in the country for the three day event in Las Vegas and Prep Hoops walked away with a lot of takeaways. Below are five takeaways that stood out to me.
Dereck Lively Is Under Appreciated
It is crazy to think that a consensus top 15 prospect in the country is someone we might call underrated but this is somewhat true when it comes to 7’1 Dereck Lively. Playing with Team Final, it has been a productive spring for Lively who just earned an offer from Duke. However, he might still get overlooked and part of the reason is because Team Final also features Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren who are currently the number one and two prospects in the Prep Hoops national rankings. Lively showed out this week in Las Vegas by impressing multiple NBA scouts I talked to.
Stock Soars For Taylor Bol Bowen
I wrote about him in my top 2023 performers list but what Bowen did this week in Las Vegas was that good to be talked about again. After the second day of the camp, Bowen became the talk after a 20 point performance. Those 20 points included dunks, three pointers and other shots from inside the three point line. Bowen has great bounce that makes him a great rebounder too. Bowen should receive a lot of attention from college coaches once they can start calling 2023 prospects on June 15th.
Virginia Products Looked The Part
It is only right to mention the lone two Virginia products that attended Pangos All American Camp and I will start with Justyn Fernandez. The Virginia Episcopal product got off to a slow start on the opening day of camp but made noise on the second day. It was great to see him play with his aggressive style as he was not afraid to go up and challenge people at the rim and we saw glimpses of a consistent jump shot. The coming weeks will be interesting to see if more high major coaches pull the trigger on Fernandez and offer him a scholarship.
2022 guard Jayden Epps Jayden Epps 6'1" | CG Combine Academy | 2022 State #41 Nation NC was able to show off his scoring touch against the best of the best at Pangos All-American Camp as he reminded a lot of people that he is one of the top scoring guards in the country and a player that can get it going in bunches. Epps, who recently de-committed from Providence will be taking an official visit to NC State this weekend.
Vanderbilt Commits Impress
Jerry Stackhouse and the Vanderbilt staff have got to be happy with the early work they have done in the class of 2022 securing commitments from Lee Dort Lee Dort 6'10" | C Greenhill School | 2022 State #67 Nation TX and Noah Shelby Noah Shelby 6'2" | PG Greenhill | 2022 State #139 Nation TX . Dort was a constant force in the low post finishing well around the rim, trying to dunk everything and cleaned up the glass well. Noah Shelby Noah Shelby 6'2" | PG Greenhill | 2022 State #139 Nation TX showed his high level shot making capabilities and is a guard that I expect to put up a lot of points during his time in the SEC.
Doors Were Open To NBA Teams
One of the cooler things about Pangos All-American Camp was that it allowed NBA scouts and front office members to attend the event to evaluate the young talent and it made me realize how I wish more grassroots events would open the door to NBA teams. The goal is to play at the highest level, so why not let NBA teams come to more events?
