Continue ReadingI spent time Saturday morning checking out several of the better teams and players in Ohio at Oak Hills High School. Throughout the morning, I was able to watch many quality prospects, but most importantly I saw some great guard play. This piece focuses on 5 of the top performers in the backcourt for 2022 guards.
Ryan Chew Ryan Chew 5'11" | PG Bellbrook | 2022 State OH (Alter) 5-10- Chew played well a year ago for the Knights even though he only played half the season due to transferring from Bellbrook. The 5-10 PG looked great against a very talented Covington Catholic team. Chew proved to be a problem against the Colonels backcourt led by Evan Ipsaro Evan Ipsaro 5'10" | PG New Richmond | 2023 OH . He timed his steals and got a hand on the ball forcing some turnovers. Showed he could run the point but also play off-ball with his shooting strengths. More importantly though, Chew showed his game is drive-and-kick as he setup his teammates for perimeter shots. While only being 5-10, Chew’s ability to move the ball makes me believe he’s a solid D3 priority.
Sean Keller Sean Keller 5'11" | PG Elder | 2022 State OH (Elder) 5-10- Keller looked like a collegiate prospect against Ponitz and really showed improvement since seeing him in March in the Regional Semifinals. The lefty is one of the better floor generals I’ve seen in the area and is a true point guard. The lefty has an unorthodox shot, but it goes in. Once he gets hot, it’s tough to stop and contain. Has several good scoring options around him, but missed one of his top teammates as Andrew Harp Andrew Harp 6'5" | SF Elder | 2022 State OH (2022) was not in attendance. I will be intrigued to see how Keller and Harp compete this Winter as the 1-2 punch for the Panthers. Keller appears to be a collegiate prospect in my opinion.
Sean Millsaps (Fishers) 5-10- Millsaps was the only Indiana prospect I saw as Fishers was the only school from the Hoosier state I saw on Saturday. While many guys showed me an ability to create offense, Millsaps impressed with his quick feet on the defensive end. Great foot speed and keeps his hands up to avoid pick pocketing or fouling. Showed he could defend either guard positions. Offensive end didn’t have the best looking jump shot, but really impressed me with his passing. Much like Ryan Chew Ryan Chew 5'11" | PG Bellbrook | 2022 State OH (mentioned above), Millsaps is pass-first and showed he could make the extra pass for a great shot vs settling for a good shot himself. While I have a concern with his shooting form and mechanics, I feel Millsaps is still a quality collegiate prospect especially for D3 schools.
Ryan Paris Ryan Paris 6'4" | SG Hilliard Davidson | 2022 State OH (Hilliard Davidson) 6-4- Paris has played well on the AAU scene for Mid Ohio Pumas, but Saturday proved himself to me as I got my first look at the SG. Before we talk about his scoring, I have to shoutout Paris for his tenacity on the defensive end. Put himself in the right position on help-side while also showing the correct mechanics on-ball as well as being in the right place at right time. More importantly, Paris communicates on the defensive end and does the basic communication when talking on help-side, etc. Offensively, Paris is a really fundamentally solid guard. I like his size at 6-4 which brings an advantage on the perimeter. Showed confidence shooting anywhere on the perimeter and willingness to but shots up in higher volumes. I think NAIA schools should have Paris on their radar and should make him a priority to see in July.
Jared Frey Jared Frey 6'5" | SG ISA | 2022 State OH (Hilliard Davidson) 6-5- Frey was one of the better known names leading up to the event as he already has offers from several D1 programs. The sharp shooting lefty was off his mark during the day but showed me a lot of drive as he powered through the Wildcats game against Mason. As Frey struggled to consistently get perimeter shots to fall, he went to his dribble drive and took over the scoring with his pullup shots combined with his shiftiness around the rim. Still had the confidence to shoot the ball from beyond the arc and did hit those shots, but it was this willingness to shoot even when shots weren’t falling that made me intrigued by Frey.
