Because of the pandemic, the folks at Mater Dei had to take a more regional approach to teams who participated and limited the number of fans that could be in attendance. Even with those roadblocks, the Extravaganza was still a high level two-day event filled with talent. Here’s a look at the standouts from the class of 2023 and 2024.
Kylan Boswell Kylan Boswell 6'2" | PG AZ Compass Prep | 2023 AZ , 2023 – Corona Centennial – The sharpshooting guard will have a big summer ahead of him as far as collegiate looks and opportunities go. Boswell, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, has one of the more balanced and smooth shooting strokes in the state and couples that with a high basketball IQ both with and without the ball in his hands.
Ian De La Rosa, 2024, St. Augustine – De La Rosa was one of the surprise prospects of the event for us as we hadn’t seen much of him live during his pre-high school years. The 6-foot-2 guard is a crafty all-around scorer who has impressive burst in the open court. De La Rosa is a confident and consistent shooter both from the three-point and mid-range levels.
Jurian Dixon Jurian Dixon 6'4" | SG St. Augustine | 2023 State #247 Nation CA-S , 2023, St. Augustine – Dixon’s all-around impact showed why he’s one of the top prospects in the class of 2023. The 6-foot-4 swingman is a good rebounder for his position, can defend multiple positions, and has true inside-out scoring ability as he can slash his way to the basket for paint finishes or knock down an open jumper.
Brady Dunlap Brady Dunlap 6'7" | SF Harvard-Westlake | 2023 State #100 Nation CA-S , 2023, Harvard-Westlake – Dunlap continued to show his long-term upside in this event. The 6-foot-6 wing is a fluid athlete with picturesque shooting mechanics and a high basketball IQ. Dunlap doesn’t force offensive action when there’s nothing there and is best in spot-shooting and one and two-dribble pull-up situations.
Jared McCain Jared McCain 6'3" | PG Centennial | 2023 State #24 Nation CA-S , 2023 – Corona Centennial – A lot of scouts, writers, opponents, basketball people may label McCain just a shooter, and while he is elite at that skill, the 6-foot-2 point guard has really expanded his offensive arsenal. McCain still has that freakish range, but can also break defenders down off the dribble and get into the lane for a soft-touched floater.
Lawrence Rudolph, 2024, St. Augustine – Rudolph has a very promising future at the point guard spot down in San Diego for perennial power St. Augustine. The quick and crafty freshman has great open court speed, body control when shifting around defenders and is a crafty finisher around the basket. Rudolph does a nice job of not over-handling and finding teammates with on-time and on-target passes.
