While we weren’t able to attend in person, we will be checking out a majority of the 16U and 17U teams over the next few weeks via Baller TV. Below is a look at the 16U Waterloo Salvation team. We watched their game against Waukee JAM.
Jamauryus Bradford-Gates (Waterloo East)
A quick lead guard who handles the ball well, Bradford-Gates is at his best when he’s playing downhill and using his quickness to blow by his defender and get to the rim. He’s a capable perimeter shooter but is much better when he’s aggressive and attacking.
Kewone Jones Kewone Jones 6'2" | SF Waterloo East | 2023 State IA (Waterloo East)
A big-bodied, 6-3 wing, Jones had a really strong all-around game for Salvation in their loss to Waukee JAM. He competes on the glass on both ends of the floor, using his frame, athleticism, and great hands to pull down contested rebounds. He has a bit of a slow release on his jumper, but he knocked down 3 after 3 off the catch. I’d like to see him use his physicality a little more and post up smaller defenders, but his shooting was top-notch in this game.
Tucker Clark (Center Point-Urbana)
A 6-5 forward with good length, Clark was active on the glass on both ends of the floor. He runs the floor hard, is scrappy, and is a good help defender who came from the weakside for a few big blocks at the rim.
Casey Gardner Casey Gardner 5'8" | PG Dunkerton | 2023 State IA (Dunkerton)
Gardner ranked among the state’s leaders in assists last winter, and it’s easy to see why. He’s constantly looking to get others involved and has excellent court vision. He’s a good ball-handler and a capable 3-point shooter who does a good job stepping behind the screen and getting his shot off. He does a nice job utilizing fall fakes to freeze the defender and get that split-second jump on them to get to the rim, and he has a nice floater game. At times, he can be a little too unselfish, as he passed up a layup to make a pass that resulted in a turnover, but his lead guard skills to really strong, and he’s a leader on the floor.
