While we weren’t able to attend in person, we will be checking out a majority of the 16U and 17U teams over the next few weeks via BallerTV. Below is a look at the 17U Martin Brothers team. We watched their game against Kingdom Hoops Elite.
Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA (Aplington-Parkersburg)
Mackie was arguably the breakout star of the state tournament in March, and the Upper Iowa commit has continued his strong play in the spring. He’s quick with the ball in his hands, and his jump shot keeps improving. He showcased a really nice mid-range pull-up jumper, getting the ball into his shooting pocket and elevating into his shot quickly. He’s a talented playmaker and good athlete who can score from all three levels and facilitate.
Carson Toebe Carson Toebe 6'3" | PG Clear Lake | 2022 State IA (Clear Lake)
A physical guard who competes on the glass on both ends of the floor, Toebe is a good ball-handler with size and he uses his physicality on both ends to his advantage. He gets the ball into the shooting pocket quickly and has the ability to get to the bucket and finish through contact.
Karter Petzenhauser Karter Petzenhauser 6'4" | SG Spencer | 2022 State IA (Spencer)
A well-built, 6-2 wing who can fill it up from all three levels, Petzenhauser was fearless, routinely attacking the rim and finishing through contact. He has a high release on his jumper, getting good lift and keeping the ball high, which makes his smooth stroke difficult to contest.
Cameron Fens Cameron Fens 7'0" | C Hempstead | 2022 State IA (Hempstead)
Fens is a big interior presence at 6-10. He defends the pick-and-roll well, showing hard and getting back to his man quickly. He does a good job keeping the ball high on rebounds and post catches, and he showed good footwork and touch with his right hand. His left is still a work in progress, but is developing. He’s a good rim protector in the paint, and he walls up and defends against other post players.
Peter Moe Peter Moe 6'9" | PF Iowa City West | 2022 State IA (Iowa City West)
As he showcased throughout the high school season, Moe is a very talented scorer from all three levels. He has the size, skill, and footwork to score against smaller defenders in the paint, and the ability to put the ball on the floor against bigger defenders. He’s also a gifted shooter who can knock down 3s at a high clip. He needs to continue to tighten up his handle as he moves to the next level, as he’ll likely be more of a wing player in college, but there are few in the state who can put the ball in the bucket with the efficiency that Moe does.
Shawn Gilbert Shawn Gilbert 6'7" | PF Central DeWitt | 2022 State IA (Central DeWitt)
A big, physical interior presence on both ends of the floor, Gilbert showed excellent touch, footwork, and patience on his post touches. He uses his big frame to back smaller defenders down and score around the rim, and he’s a willing passer who sees the floor well.
