While we weren’t able to attend in person, we will be checking out a majority of the 16U and 17U teams over the next few weeks via Baller TV. Below is a look at the 16U Martin Brothers team. We watched their game against Kingdom Hoops Navy.
Travaughn Luyobya Travaughn Luyobya 5'10" | PG Clear Lake | 2023 State IA (Clear Lake)
A 5-10 lead guard who values the basketball, Luyobya isn’t much of a shooting threat at this point, but he is a true lead guard who thrives on getting others involved. He looks to push the tempo and does a good job of attacking and getting to the rim when nobody stops the ball, or making the right play when he is picked up in transition. He’s a solid on-ball defender with quick feet, and he’s one of the faster players in the state with the ball in his hands.
Jake Ingle Jake Ingle 5'7" | PG Newton | 2023 State IA (Newton)
Ingle is a solid role player for this Martin Brothers team, a small but effective shooter off the catch who also handles it and passes it well. His size (5-7) can be a bit of a liability, but he has good footwork that he uses to help create space to get his shot off.
Jaden Harris Jaden Harris 6'0" | PG Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA (Cedar Rapids Washington)
An athletic 6-0 lead guard who handles the ball really well, I love the way that Harris competes on the glass on both ends of the floor. He’s a tough guard who doesn’t back down from bigger players, and he sees the floor really well. He has the length and athleticism to be an impact defender on the perimeter. When Martin Brothers was trying to ice the game away, it was often Harris’ hands they were trying to get the ball into.
Cooper Randall (Waukee)
A good role player for this group, Randall is a 6-1 shooter who moves well off the ball and can really shoot it off the catch. He’s a good team defender who understands rotations well.
Martez Wiggley Martez Wiggley 6'4" | PF Aplington-Parkersburg | 2023 State IA (Waterloo East)
Wiggley may have been the player I was most pleasantly surprised by in this game. A 6-4 forward, he’s big and physical, and he uses his body effectively to bully his way to the rim and finish through contact in the paint. What really stood out was his passing ability. He sees the floor well and is a really good passer out of the post. He showed good touch from the free-throw line, so there is some potential there to expand his range, and he has good footwork and touch around the rim. An active player on both ends of the floor who really makes an impact.
Aidan Yamilkoski Aidan Yamilkoski 6'4" | SG Xavier | 2023 State IA (Xavier)
A lengthy 6-3 wing, Yamilkoski can score from all three levels. He looks to attack the rim against aggressive closeouts, and does a nice job utilizing ball fakes to freeze the defender and get by them. He showed good form and a quick release off the catch on his perimeter stroke, and he has the length and athleticism to be a quality defender.
Traijan Sain Traijan Sain 6'5" | SF Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA (Cedar Rapids Washington)
Arguably the player on this team with the most upside, Sain is a long, athletic, 6-5 wing who can impact the game on both ends of the floor. He has a smooth release on his jumper and is a versatile defender who moves his feet well on the ball. He was playing very aggressively in the game that we caught, looking to attack the rim and get to the free throw line routinely. With his ability to score from all three levels and make an impact defensively, he’s definitely a prospect that colleges from all levels will be monitoring closely.
Padraig Gallagher Padraig Gallagher 6'5" | SF Beckman Catholic | 2023 State IA (Beckman Catholic)
Gallagher is a pure scorer from all three levels with a silky smooth jumper both off the dribble and the catch. He’s not an overwhelming athlete, but he has good size and length, and he’s a high IQ player who understands spacing and angles at a high level, which helps offset some of his athletic limitations. He showed the ability to be a strong playmaker out of the high post for his teammates, and he appears to be adding some strength to his frame to allow him to finish at a higher level around the bucket and through contact.
