The best players in the state were in action for the loaded event and here are some of the takeaways from the first session for Team Red.
Aaron Humphrey Aaron Humphrey 6'6" | PF Indianapolis Tindley | 2022 State IN (Tindley/2022)
Humphrey is a versatile forward who has a good frame. He can be used as a small-ball forward or a bigger wing at times. He has the ability to step out and hit 3’s, but he can also take defenders off of the dribble and use his body to finish at the rim. He has solid footwork but won’t be someone to see a lot of time in post up opportunities. Solid rebounder and overall good motor on both ends of the floor.
Steele Brasfield Steele Brasfield 6'5" | SF New Palestine | 2022 State IN (New Palestine/2022)
Brasfield is a good-sized forward who can make plays for himself or teammates. He has good athleticism that allows him to finish at the rim but also has a good shot that stretches the floor. He is best in catch and shoot opportunities at this stage but can take defenders off of the dribble to get to his spot in the mid-range. Overall, really solid scorer who can put it in the basket in a variety of ways.
Jack Benter Jack Benter 6'4" | SG Brownstown Central | 2024 State #121 Nation IN (Brownstown Central/2024)
Benter is still very young and will continue to grow out his body, but at this stage, he has good size and length. He is a terrific shooter and spends most of his time around the perimeter. He has great feel for the game and the flow of the offense at this stage. As he gets older and builds out his body a bit more, he will become more effective in the paint as well.
Braden Smith Braden Smith 6'2" | PG Woodlan | 2024 State IN (Westfield/2022)
The Purdue commit continues to show his toughness and all-around ability. He did a great job running the point with a team that had multiple shooters and scorers. Smith knows when to pick his spots and did that again this weekend. He did a good job getting into the paint and finished at the rim and showed off a good mid-range game. He also hit a couple outside shots, a part of his game he always seems to convert.
Drew Cook Drew Cook 6'0" | SG Northview | 2023 State IN (Northview/2023)
Cook has decent length but isn’t super big in the backcourt. His skillset allows him to play a few different positions on the wing, however. He can get into the lane easily with a good burst on his first step and has a much improved jumper over the last year. He’s a solid defender who will gladly take on the role of defending the top scorer on the other team.
Myles Colvin Myles Colvin 6'5" | SG Heritage Christian | 2023 State #51 Nation IN (Heritage Christian/2023)
Colvin has improved his body over the past year. He is very built and strong from top to bottom. He is a good shooter, but he is best going downhill and attacking the basket. His slashing ability has improved due to the added muscle. He has a good burst of speed that allows him to get by most defenders. Colvin can still improve when it comes to overall decision making, but his scoring ability was one of the better I saw this weekend.
Hunter Johnson Hunter Johnson 6'2" | SG South Decatur | 2022 State IN (South Decatur/2022)
Johnson is a stockier guard who has decent size as an off guard. His best tool is shooting. Although it can be a slower release, he has great elevation on his jumper and is a very good shooting from the perimeter. He has a good ability to get into the lane and can stop on a dime for a really nice pull-up jumper. Playmaking is still developing, but has the ability to play either guard position.
Dayveon Turner Dayveon Turner 5'11" | PG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN (Arsenal Tech/2022)
Turner is a short but quick lead guard who has good length. He is a very well-rounded guard who can score and distribute and knows when to do both. Despite is size, he can play off of the ball and shows a good ability to knock down shots from three. Playing on the ball is what fits him most, however, making plays for his team.
Sam Orme Sam Orme 6'9" | SF Carmel | 2023 State #196 Nation IN (Carmel/2023)
Orme looked like he added some muscle but still has an extremely long and lanky frame. He’s never going to be one to put on a ton of muscle, but he still needs to add some to improve his overall game. He is a very good shooter who is always locked in from the corner. At this stage, he’s still more of a standstill shooter but he did make some aggressive moves off of the bounce this past weekend. His length makes him a solid defender, especially when he’s switched on to shorter, quicker guards. He impacted a few shots whether he blocked them or not.
