I saw games from players in 6 different states throughout the weekend, so in the fifth article of my new series, we look at the 2024 standout guards from the state of Ohio and in the Dayton area for the Grit Region Memorial Classic in Columbus. Let’s get started.
Timothy Carpenter Timothy Carpenter 6'4" | PF Trotwood-Madison | 2024 State OH III – 6’3″ SG – Team Flyght Ohio (Trotwood)
Carpenter shot the ball extremely well in this one. He hit a couple of mid-range jumpers and knocked it down from the outside. He also can finish it extremely well on the break. When he is backing down the defender in the post, he is always looking for the open man, but he has the ability to rise up and score it. He is a lanky guard that is incredibly tough to defend, especially when he shoots it as well as he did on Saturday.
Lance Caswell – 6’3″ SG – Ohio Stars (Beavercreek)
Caswell was a top-level scorer on Saturday night who knocked it down from the outside and is extremely aggressive to the hole. He is a good finisher inside, has a nice euro step, and always takes it strong to the hole. He also did not force a single shot despite being on fire. It was an impressive performance by Lance all weekend.
Juan Cranford Jr. – 6’1″ SG – Team Flyght Ohio (Huber Heights)
Cranford is a bigger, physical guard who can make plays on the offensive end. He can drive past defenders and always goes strong to the rim. He uses his length to get to the hole and finish around the defenders. He also showed a pretty good three-point shot, and he rebounded it well. Overall, it was a good 17 point performance by Cranford on Saturday afternoon.
Parker Penrod – 5’10” PG – Ohio Stars (Troy Christian)
Penrod is a smaller guard who can really do it all on the offensive end. He is quick down the floor and has a very quick crossover. He is incredibly smooth with the ball in his hands, and the southpaw can knock it down consistently from deep. In addition, he is a real floor general and runs the team. He makes plays for his teammates and has great touch on his passes. He was very impressive in the final game of the day on Saturday.
Aaron Scott Jr. – 6’2″ SF – Team Flyght Ohio (Springfield)
Scott is a wing who plays very well on the defensive end of the floor. He moves his feet well on the defensive end and uses his length to make plays. He is also incredibly smooth in transition and can finish around the rim. He also had a nice throw-down at the rim on the fast break.
Javen Vaughn – 5’8″ PG – Team Flyght Ohio (West Carrollton)
Vaughn is another guard for Team Flyght Ohio who shot the ball extremely well. He never hesitates to shoot, can hit a nice floater, and can finish around the rim. In addition to his scoring, he has good court vision and is always looking for the open man. He also uses his length to be extremely tough on the defensive end.
