Continue ReadingJune summer leagues are underway across the state as players are able to play with their high school teams for the next few weeks, and I was able to check out some of the Milwaukee-area talent competing in Franklin last night. These are some of the top prospects and performers that I was able to see on Monday night.
Myles Herro (5’10 2025 PG, Whitnall)- It’s always exciting to watch a new class of players move into the high school ranks, and one making an early splash is Myles Herro. Don’t let his size fool you, Myles proved he can compete with players 2-3 year older than him, and he did just that as he put up 17 points and dropped some dimes in a tight win over Racine Horlick. He doesn’t have the physical attributes that upperclassmen have, but he’s still able to beat them with his change of pace and feel for the game. Myles was so dangerous coming off screens and getting his defender on his hip to either make plays finishing at the rim or dishing it off to an open teammate in the paint. Myles proved that he can score at all three levels, and even hit the last two buckets of the game to give Whitnall the lead and the win in a tight game.
Jacob Naber Jacob Naber 6'7" | PF Janesville Parker | 2022 State WI (6’7 2022 PF, Janesville Parker)- Was my first time watching Jacob play, and I was impressed by his physical presence in the paint. He’s a strong forward with size at 6’7, and he’s not afraid to fight through opposing players to pull down rebounds on both ends of the floor. Jacob is a danger catching on the block with the ability to back his man down to get into good position around the rim. He scores with a variety of simple post moves that he makes look routine, and after averaging nearly a double-double last season, he should be in for a big junior year.
Adrian Bryant (6’ 2023 G, Racine Case)- After transferring into Case last year and making an immediate impact, Adrian looks ready to take on an even bigger role as a junior. He’s so quick off the bounce and has the strength to drive through contact to score in the paint. When attacking he moves fast but remains under control to avoid charging, and keeps his chin at the rim when elevating to score. I was also impressed by his outside shot and his high arcing floater as he looks to improve his scoring versatility.
Jadin Dombrowski (6’2 2022 SG, Racine Horlick)- Jadin Dombrowski went on a shooting rampage in the first half for Horlick, showing why defenders always need to account for him from beyond the arc. His range is pretty much anywhere within halfcourt, and he showed that he’s not afraid to let it fly with a hand in his face. Jadin has plenty of confidence in his shooting ability, and it’s well warranted because he knocks down threes at a high percentage just about every time I watch him play.
Jalen Haynes Jalen Haynes 6'3" | SG Martin Luther | 2023 State WI (6’1 2023 G, Martin Luther)- Jalen was the main scoring threat for Martin Luther on the night because of his ability to attack the basket decisively with his quickness. Defenders simply weren’t able react quick enough when Jalen attacked them off the bounce, so he was constantly able to get into the paint or force defenders to back off enough for him to get off a clean look from three. In transition he can fly up the floor, and he showed tremendous body control when going up in traffic/through contact to finish at a high rate. His quickness also translated to the defensive end as he was constantly pressuring opposing ball handlers and making them uncomfortable on the ball.
Amari Jedkins Amari Jedkins 6'7" | PF Racine Case | 2022 State WI (6’8 2022 F, Racine Case)- Wasn’t Amari’s best showing offensively, but his defensive versatility continues to stand out. Despite standing at 6’8 and often being the tallest player on the floor, he looks comfortable switching off and guarding guards on the perimeter because of how athletic he is at his size. Amari can move his feet on the perimeter, but also act as a rim protector in the paint with his explosiveness and timing. He can handle the ball in the open floor, and he elevated for a couple of high flying transition dunks on the day. Still a ton of potential to keep improving as a player.
Wilfred Kamukama (6’10 2023 PF/C, Martin Luther)- A big time addition into the 2023 class, Wilfred is a high potential big man to track over the coming years. He’s very mobile for his size, and has no problem keeping up with a fast paced game. In the half court he does float a lot around the arc looking for threes, but when he received the ball on the block he was very efficient scoring with a quick shoulder turn. Wilfred is long and wiry as a prospect, able to block/alter shots in the paint with his 6’10 frame. Will still be looking to turn that potential into consistent production, but with the talent surrounding him he should have plenty of space to operate in isolation on the block.
