One thing has always remained, every team has that point guard, the facilitator of the ball. The coach on the floor who makes the team go. Here are some of those types of players we saw at the chsaa spring tournament.
Omari Ward 5”11. 2022. Fordham Prep
Was handed control of the team on the floor as a sophomore. This season with a year under his belt the coaching staff was excited to watch how he matured. Unfortunately, we had to wait until this tournament to see his development. It was worth the wait. A heady guard, an excellent passer who handles the ball really well. Stays low and tight with his handle. Makes the difficult bounce pass look easy.
D J Victory 5”9. 2022. Cardinal Hayes (pictured)
Extremely strong with the dribble. His low base makes it difficult to knock him off of the ball. Able to blow by defenders. Exceptional feel on his passes. I have watched him many times complete long passes through the air or off the bounce pass.
Matt Walsh Matt Walsh 6'3" | SF Comsewogue | 2022 State NY . 6”3. 2022. Stepinac
Samuel could have been in the 3 point specialists group as well. But watching him play is very calming for the Stepinac coaching staff. He just understands the game. Knows where guys should be, who needs the ball, or when it is his time to score. A talented steady complete guard.
Xavier Barrow 5”10. 2023. St Joseph by the Sea
He doesn’t play like his age. Very cool, poised player. In crunch time the ball is in his hands and he cooly over and over again made the right decisions. Automatic from the foul line in the later minutes of the game.
Chance Morrish 6”1. 2022. St. Francis Prep
A guard who gets everyone involved. But make no mistake this young man has the ability to score in bunches. Confident player, excellent ball handler. Quickly gets into the lane.
Uriah Logan 6”0. 2021. St Peters
Very unselfish guard. Tremendous strength and quickness to get into the lane. A pass-first playmaker. Makes the no-look pass look easy. Steady guard not flashy just solid.
Coming next will be reports on top defenders, mid range /slashers and post players. All from the Chsaa spring tournament.
