It marked the second-straight weekend of high school basketball action where coaches of all levels were allowed to attend and evaluate. After a strong slate of games to cap things off, I’ll take a look at some takeaways from the day.
Cam Whitmore and Favour Aire Favour Aire 6'10" | C Bishop McNamara | 2022 State #86 Nation MD represent
The No. 1 ( Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD ) and No. 3 ( Favour Aire Favour Aire 6'10" | C Bishop McNamara | 2022 State #86 Nation MD ) players in our 2022 MD/DC player rankings faced off as Archbishop Spalding took on Bishop McNamara. Both players proved their worth. Spalding came out victorious by a final score of 75-62 led by Whitmore’s 23 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two assists. He was active on both ends and on multiple occasions jumped the passing lanes to spark transition opportunities. Whitmore shot 8-of-13 from the field, 2-of-4 from deep and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Aire imposed his will inside as indicated by his 27 points and 14 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Aire was efficient from the field shooting 12-of-20 and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. Both players supplied a number of power five staffs court side to watch closely, and rightfully so.
DeMatha flexes their muscles
It’s safe to say that after the two weekend’s DeMatha will be the top-ranked team in the DMV. Their overall depth, skill and experience makes it a tough argument for any other program. Rodney Rice Rodney Rice 6'4" | CG DeMatha | 2022 State #89 Nation MD was exceptional in the 12:30 game that was a blowout win over St. Frances as he scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from three. Rice also dished out four assists in the effort. Jacoi Huthcinson has taken advantage of the live stage to prove his worth as a tough-nosed all-around guard. He scored 16 points and did so from all three levels. Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD is starting to impact the box score in multiple ways with regularity and Jerrell Roberson Jerrell Roberson 6'8" | C DeMatha | 2022 State MD is emerging as a dominant finisher inside who can also be a pick-and-pop threat.
Devin Ceaser Devin Ceaser 6'1" | CG St. Stephen's & St. Agnes | 2022 State VA was a top stock riser from the event overall
Ceaser has to be in the conversation of top 3-to-5 stock risers from this event based off his recruitment explosion. Prior, he was regarded as strictly a low-major prospect but now has caught the full attention of a plethora of mid-majors including the A-10 programs. His explosive athleticism took coaches by surprise both weekends as he finishes above the rim with consistency despite being 6-foot-1. He’s a volume scorer who is required to take a lot of shots in order for his team to be in a position to win. The edge that he brings to the defensive end excites coaches especially for the point guard position. Ceaser picked up seven offers from both weekends and I expect at least one or two to come his way following yesterday. Virginia Tech was Ceaser’s first high major offer, which was extended late last night.
Bullis caps off perfect Live record
There weren’t many people talking about this Bullis team prior to the live weekends, but yesterday with a huge win over St. Frances, they capped off a perfect 7-0 record. A solid core comprised of 2022 forward Adam Angwafo Adam Angwafo 6'7" | C Bullis | 2022 State MD , 2023 Ryan Sabol Ryan Sabol 6'3" | CG Gonzaga | 2023 State MD , 2023 Zane Adnan Zane Adnan 6'3" | CG Bullis | 2023 State MD and 2024 Tyler Boston Tyler Boston 5'10" | PG Bullis | 2024 State #291 Nation MD orchestrated smooth and balanced offensive execution throughout. They fought hard defensively while rotating on a string when someone was beat off the dribble. Bullis may have not had the attention prior to Live, but heading into the fall everyone will take this success into consideration when trying to figure out the landscape of the DMV rankings.
