There were two events in the DC area, with the main private school one being DMV Live at DeMatha.
I was there live streaming the event for the CBG Live Network, and you can see all of the games archived here.
There was tons of talent in the gym, so much that I’ll have to break the standouts down into multiple parts per class! Here’s a look at part two of the top 2023 prospects, looking at standouts from the all the schools.
Jeanott Basima | 6’4” WG | John Carroll
It was my first time getting to see Basima who was named MVP of the Baltimore playoffs last year, and I was very impressed and think that division one schools will be hopping on him here soon. He’s a long and athletic guard that thrives in transition and when he’s able to get downhill, he lives in the paint and is an excellent finisher in traffic and around the rim and he brings it on both ends and is an excellent defender and rebounder at his position as well.
Austin Abrams Austin Abrams 6'3" | SG Mount St. Joseph | 2023 State MD | 6’3” WG | Mount St. Joseph’s
Abrams is the x-factor for this talented Mount St. Joe’s team, as he’s a glue guy who brings it on both ends and can make shots at a high clip. He works well off the ball to get open coming off screens and drifting with the ball, he has a quick release and deep range off the catch and he can attack closeouts and get in the midrange and to the rim to finish as well.
Isaiah Coleman Isaiah Coleman 6'5" | SF Word of God | 2023 State #59 Nation NC | 6’5” WG | National Christian
Coleman may have increased his stock more than anyone in the 2023 class this past weekend, as the 6’5” guard showed he’s been improving and is ready to take on the role as the go-to guy. He’s very versatile at his size as he can play and guard multiple positions, he can handle the basketball and make plays for others and he’s improved in his perimeter skill set as far as his ability to create off the bounce and make shots from deep as well.
Gio Moore Gio Moore 6'5" | SF Blair | 2022 State MD | 6’6” F | Rock Creek Christian Green
Moore is a new name in the DMV that will make a name for himself with his high motor and productivity on both ends of the floor. He’s a walking mismatch at his size as he can play inside-out, he’s versatile on the offensive end and can guard multiple positions and he’s a good rebounder and willing to do the dirty work to help his team.
Jahnathan LaMothe | 6’4” CG | St. Frances Academy
Lamothe is one of the fastest rising prospects in the 2023 class as it seems like everyone in the country is reaching out or offering him, and he showed why this past weekend as he has an entire bag as a big guard who can run the show. He isn’t the most athletic guy but he has a great frame that is strong already and should continue to fill out, he has great feel and can make plays for others off the bounce and he was excellent at making shots from multiple levels both off the catch and off the bounce.
Bryan Simmons Bryan Simmons 5'10" | SF #175 Nation PA | 6’7” F | St. Frances Academy
A new addition to an already stacked St. Frances squad, Simmons brings a lot of versatility to this group with his blend of size, athleticism and budding skill set that will only get better with time. The 6’7” forward can guard multiple positions and is excellent as a help side defender to block shots, he’s long and bouncy around the rim and makes energy plays and he showed an improvement in his ability to make jumpers from 18 feet and out.
Carlton Carrington Carlton Carrington 6'4" | CG St. Frances | 2023 State #84 Nation MD | 6’3” WG | St. Frances Academy
Carrington isn’t quite the household name as the other St. Frances guys on this list, but the 6’3” two guard is a very important piece to this group as he can fill it up in bunches and make shots from all over the floor. He’s a microwave scorer that can make shots from deep off the catch, he can handle it both in transition and in the half court to create shots and he has good instincts and feel on both ends of the floor.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’9” C | St. Anne’s-Belfield
Lang was his usual productive self throughout the weekend, matching up against some very high level big men prospects and not only holding his own but playing well and consistent throughout the event. The 6’9” post showed his high motor and was the second leading rebounder in the event, he showed his ability to seal and provide a big target and finish with touch in the paint and he stepped out and shot the basketball well too.
