There were two events in the DC area, with the main private school one being DMV Live at DeMatha.
I was there live streaming the event for the CBG Live Network, and you can see all of the games archived here.
There was tons of talent in the gym, so much that I’ll have to break the standouts down into multiple parts per class! Here’s a look at part one of the top 2023 prospects, focusing on the standouts from the Maryland schools.
Jaden Johnson Jaden Johnson 6'0" | PG Bishop McNamara | 2023 State MD | 6’2” PG | Bishop McNamara
Johnson is set to be a breakout player in the WCAC this year, as the strong 6’2” point guard has really improved his body and his game and was fantastic in the two days that he played at DMV Live. He’s an athletic and strong guard that brings it and competes on both ends of the floor, he’s a three level scorer that can get to spots and make tough shots and he has takeover ability when he gets it going which he showed this weekend.
Brendt Johnson | 5’11” CG | Bishop McNamara
Johnson stepped up big for McNamara throughout the weekend, starting the weekend on the bench and working his way into the starting lineup with his consistent ability to make shots from deep. The 5’11” combo was lights out from deep and was a good secondary ball handler, he competed and hustled on both ends and he was the x-factor for them for much of the weekend.
Ryan Sabol Ryan Sabol 6'3" | CG Gonzaga | 2023 State MD | 6’2” CG | Bullis
Sabol is a player that could have a breakout year in the DMV this season, as he’s a highly skilled combo guard that can fill it up and create shots for himself and others off the bounce. He’s a microwave scorer that can get hot quickly and make shots from multiple levels, he can knock it down from deep and he has a good feel for the game on both ends.
Zane Adnan Zane Adnan 6'3" | CG Bullis | 2023 State MD | 6’3” PG | Bullis
Adnan is the floor general for this Bullis team, and when they needed to settle down late in the game or needed someone to make a play he came up for them time and time again. He’s a strong guard with good shift off the bounce, he shot it well from deep and he set the tone on both ends of the floor for his group.
Jacoi Hutchinson Jacoi Hutchinson 6'3" | CG IMG | 2023 State #101 Nation FL | 6’3” CG | DeMatha
Hutchinson is part of a DeMatha group that features about 10 D1 players, and he’s their top 2023 prospect right now and showed that he can be equally effective as a scorer and a distributor throughout the weekend. He’s a strong guard who plays at a different cadence than others and has good change of pace and ability to create off the bounce, he can fill it up and make tough shots especially from the midrange level and he was one of the top assist guys on the weekend as well.
Kevon Corley | 6’6” F | Rock Creek Christian Green
Corley is a guy to keep an eye on in the DMV this season, as the 6’6” hybrid forward is a true hooper who can impact the game in a number of ways and has a good amount in his bag to score it with. He has good size and can put it on the deck and create on the perimeter, he uses his size to make shots over other defender and he’s strong enough to play in traffic as well.
Chigozie Ekeagwu | 6’5” PF | Rock Creek Christian Green
Ekeagwu isn’t the biggest or most skilled big man, however he made a huge impact with the high motor he played with on both ends of the floor. He’s strong and athletic and never stops playing hard, he blocks shots and rebounds at a good rate and he makes all of the hustle plays and does the dirty work for his team.
Tyler Perkins Tyler Perkins 6'4" | SG Landon | 2023 State #268 Nation MD | 6’2” WG | Landon
Perkins was the top scorer for Landon throughout the weekend, and he showed he can fill it up in bunches with his ability to make shots from deep and create off the bounce. He’s long and has a great feel on the offensive end, he can make shots from deep at a high clip and he knows how to play both on and off the basketball to get open and get good shots.
