There were two events in the DC area, with the main private school one being DMV Live at DeMatha.
I was there live streaming the event for the CBG Live Network, and you can see all of the games archived here.
There was tons of talent in the gym, so much that I’ll have to break the standouts down into multiple parts per class! Here’s a look at part one of the top 2022 prospects, focusing on the standouts from the Maryland schools.
Cam Whitmore | 6’6” PF | Archbishop Spalding
Whitmore has been one of the hottest prospects in the country, and he showed this weekend that he was the best player in the event and solidified his spot as the #1 player in the new PH Maryland rankings by leading the event in both scoring and rebounding. A walking mismatch, Whitmore is a freak athlete with good strength that can play well above the rim, guard multiple positions and he showed he can make shots from deep at a consistent clip as well.
Ty Peterson | 5’10” PG | Archbishop Spalding
While Whitmore stole the show, the rest of Spalding’s lineup fed off of his success and played very confidently, especially Peterson who was always there to make a play when his team needed him to. He isn’t the biggest guy, but Peterson is lightning quick and very shifty off the bounce, he gets in the lane at will and is able to score over bigger defender and he plays with a great motor on both ends.
CJ Scott | 6’5” CG | Arcbishop Spalding
Almost the opposite of Peterson but the perfect compliment, Scott is a big and bruising guard that can get downhill and use his size to finish through traffic at the rim. He’s a good defender who can body up and guard other ball handlers and multiple positions, he’s surprisingly shifty with a good handle and his size gives him a big advantage when he’s able to get a head of steam and your best bet is to just foul him or he will convert.
Josh Rivers | 6’5” WG | Archbishop Spalding
Rivers was the x-factor for Spalding, with the defense focused on containing Whitmore and the two driving guards above, Rivers was able to move around and spot up and makes shots from deep, which he did at a very high clip throughout the event. The 6’5” wing is a truly lethal shooter that knows his game and spots up and makes shots consistently, and he burned many teams and when he did Spalding often won those games.
Favour Aire | 6’9” C | Bishop McNamara
Aire showed this weekend why he should be considered one of the top big men in the country, as he not only ran the floor hard and was one of the top rebounder and shot blockers, he was also fantastic as a go-to guy in the post as he showed his skill set and ability to score in the paint as well. He shoots the jump hook and fadeaway very well, he attacks the glass on the offensive end for put backs and he is the epitome of a paint clogger and rim protector with great timing and length.
Adam Angwafo | 6’7” PF | Bullies
Angwafo really impressed me this weekend and was productive in a number of ways as the 6’7” big man was all over the floor on both ends every game I watched them. He’s athletic and plays with a terrific motor as he hit the glass hard on both ends, finished around the rim with consistency and he ran the floor hard and made tons of hustle plays to help his team win as well.
Tyrell Ward | 6’6” WF | DeMatha
DeMatha showed why they are considered one of the top teams in the country as they were absolutely dominant this weekend, and it all started with Ward and his ability to do pretty much any and everything on the floor at his size. He took the challenge of guarding the other team’s best player, he showed his ability to put it on the deck and make plays for others, he shot it consistently and made athletic plays in transition. To put it more simply, he was fantastic and consistent in almost every facet of the game.
Jerrell Roberson | 6’8” PF | DeMatha
Roberson really boosted his stock this weekend in my eyes, and as more and more coaches get to watch him play I expect to see more and more mid and high major coaches get involved based on his versatility. At 6’8” he’s long and athletic in the paint, he showed good consistency stepping out and making shots from deep and he runs the floor hard with his guards for easy buckets.
Rodney Rice | 6’3” CG | DeMatha
Rice got off to a slow start this past weekend, but once the 6’3” guard got it going he showed why he’s considered one of the top scoring guards in the country. He’s as smooth as they come as he can play on or off the basketball and can make shots from multiple levels, he’s able to get to spots and make contested shots off the bounce and once he hits a couple shots from deep he’s able to takeover a game and ring off multiple in a row.
Aidan Mess | 6’7” PF | Mount St. Joseph’s
It was my first time getting to watch Mess and his Mount St. Joe’s team, and I have to say I was impressed enough to think that there’s a lot of Patriot and Ivy League schools that would benefit from having him. At 6’7” he’s a stretch big that can make shots from deep and is a good passer as well, but it’s his motor that sets him apart as he plays hard and rebounds on both ends of the floor, he does the dirty work and makes all the hustle plays for his team.
