It was the first chance for Division I coaches to attend live events since the pre-COVID days that seem like a lifetime ago. We’ll have a slew of content rotating here on Prep Hoops Maryland throughout the week with evaluations and takeaways, but I’ll start with pointing out the notable prospects from the 2022 class.
Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD | 6’7 | Spalding
You cannot start any standouts article without first mentioning Whitmore. This was the type of weekend that his name ballooned to national recognition after proving time and time again in front of coaches from North Carolina, Duke, Virginia and more that he was hands down the best prospect in attendance. In two games played on Saturday, Whitmore totaled 66 points, 26 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. If those numbers aren’t eye-popping enough, his shooting efficiency will knock you off your feet. The 6-foot-7 wing converted on 23 of his 31 field goal attempts (74.2%) and nine of his 13 triples (69.2%). His jump shot was said to be his biggest blemish coming into this summer, but he has quickly improved in that sense while continuing to make his jaw-dropping plays around the rim on both ends. Whitmore picked up offers from North Carolina, Louisville and Alabama this weekend and should undoubtedly be considered a top-30 prospect nationally in the class of 2022.
Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | 5’9 | Mt. Carmel
Perry received his first Division I offer from Loyola (MD) prior to DMV Live this weekend, but only confirmed to all onlookers that he is certainly cut out for that level despite his size. Perry can completely control a game with his ability to make plays for himself and others out of ball-screen actions and because of his elite outside shooting ability, he life extremely difficult on his defender. Perry isn’t a shot-maker that settles. He takes what the defense gives him and makes them pay in any way. He delivers pocket passes to rolling bigs, locates weakside shooters spotting up in the corner or can finish among the bigs around the rim. In the two games on Sunday in front of Loyola head coach Tavaras Hardy, Perry logged a 39-point performance against Bishop Ireton and 35 points against Rock Creek Christian.
Dug McDaniel | 5’9 | Paul IV
McDaniel played in his first event since announcing his commitment to head coach Juwan Howard and Michigan. The 5-foot-9 floor general has a tall task ahead of him this season with the amount of youth on this Paul IV roster, but what impressed me most was his leadership and composure throughout. His best outing came Saturday against John Carroll where he posted 29 points and dished out eight assists. He’s almost impossible to keep out of the paint and makes elite-level reads in high ball-screen actions. A tenacious competitor, McDaniel showed that he’ll be a key element in developing the young guards around him while posting crooked numbers on the stat sheet this season before departing to Ann Arbor.
Favour Aire Favour Aire 6'10" | C Bishop McNamara | 2022 State #86 Nation MD | 6’10 | Bishop McNamara
Aire was effective in asserting his dominance in the paint his weekend on both ends of the floor. He overwhelmed his matchups that were too small by sealing with deep position and bullying them around the rim while finishing through contact if needed. He also displayed some improvement in his face-up game by knocking down jumpers from 12-to-15 feet. Aire was just as big of an impact on the glass and altering shots. Expect Ohio State to make a strong push for the 6-foot-10 forward as he’ll visit officially this month.
Miles Webb Miles Webb 6'7" | PF St. Stephen's St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’7 | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes
Webb had many college coaches in the gym talking just based off his effort and motor, but he also caught attention with his skill set and efficiency. Against St. Frances on Saturday, the 6-foot-7 wing/forward finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 7-of-10 from the field, 3-of-5 from three and was active defensively as indicated by his three blocks and two steals. At the moment, Webb sports a low major recruitment, but could receives some calls from mid major programs after his outings this weekend.
Dylan Williamson Dylan Williamson 6'0" | CG Good Counsel | 2022 State MD | 6’0 | Good Counsel ’22
There were plenty of standout performances from the weekend and one that has to be mentioned was Williamson’s 40-point performance on Friday night. To make things even more impressive, he shot a blistering 76 percent and shortly after received an offer from Albany. He proved himself in the remainder of the games to be a true three-level scorer who can do it in microwave fashion.
Josh Rivers Josh Rivers 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD | 6’4 | Spalding
Rivers has to be mentioned as a stock riser from this event from the way he shot the ball from deep. A pure shooter, Rivers found his mark quickly this weekend and knocked down a bunch of three’s (contested on uncontested) well beyond the three-point line and looked comfortable doing so. It’s no secret that in today’s game, you can never have enough shooters on the floor, so Rivers put himself on the radar of programs from various levels after showcasing this part of his game with accuracy and in clutch moments.
Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD | 6’7 | DeMatha
Ward has a mature scoring approach to the game in that he can get to his spots off the bounce and get shots off with fluidity. Through the four game I saw, Ward averaged 17.3 points per game and did so from all three levels. When he wasn’t demoralizing his defender by making tough shots over the top of him, he was getting out in transition where his length and athleticism were displayed. Defensively Ward spent the weekend guarding multiple positions and doing so effectively.
