Continue ReadingIt was a live period, and college coaches were out in full force at Carmel and Westfield for the Charlie Hughes Shootout. 101 high school teams competed with one another in a preview for the upcoming season. Several teams and players looked very impressive and caught the eye of scouts and coaches. Here are the 2022 point guards that caught my attention during the weekend.
Sibu Collins – 5’11” – Cardinal Ritter
Collins is a smaller guard who can really make you look silly when he has the ball in his hands. He has nifty ball-handling and footwork, and his crossover fooled the defenders multiple times. He was also lights on shooting the ball on the outside. Collins did have the tendency to get out of control at times, so this is something he will have to work on, but he may have shown enough to be Ritter’s potential second option come November.
Tayshawn Comer Tayshawn Comer 6'0" | PG Cathedral | 2022 State #226 Nation IN – 6’1″ – Cathedral
Comer is the leader of the very skilled Cathedral ball club, and he does everything well without a second of hesitation. He is very quick and has a great crossover, but he is also very powerful which he showed during a nice transition dunk. Comer can get to his shot and knock down the jumper, and he has good body control inside the lane. He also is a very good cutter and knows how to get into the open spots on the floor. Comer has received several big offers, and I think he is going to do big things both this year and in the future.
Griffin Craig – 5’10” – Lapel
Craig was pretty impressive in Lapel’s win against Heritage Hills on Sunday. He has very good court vision, and he always seemed to be in control of the game when he had the ball in his hands. He also scored it well both inside and out, and he is going to do it well for Lapel all season. If he can keep up his good play on the floor, he may attract some college attention during his senior season.
Marco Fitch Marco Fitch 6'0" | PG Bloomington North | 2022 State IN – 6’0″ – Bloomington North
Fitch is a tough guard who has grown quite a bit since the last time I saw him. He also was forced into a much bigger role for Bloomington North due to the injury to Nick Klaiber Nick Klaiber 6'1" | PG Bloomington North | 2022 State IN . However, this did not phase him as he played very well for the Cougars. Fitch is a pass-first guard who handles the ball very well. He can get too ambitious and force some passes, but this should improve with more experience. When he is scoring the ball, he does very well around the rim and knows how to get the right english on his shots. Fitch is going to be an interesting player to watch develop more during his senior season, but I was very impressed this weekend.
Jalen Jackson Jalen Jackson 6'2" | PG Fort Wayne Northrop | 2022 State IN – 6’2″ – Fort Wayne Northrop
Jackson is a high-level point guard who just continues to improve and improve. He is a bigger, more physical point guard, and he can pretty much do it all. He can finish with ease on the inside and knock it down on the outside. He also has a pretty high basketball IQ which makes him an asset for any college coach. Jackson has all of the talent, and I would expect his two Division one offers to multiply in the coming months.
Randy Kelley Randy Kelley 6'0" | PG Sullivan | 2022 State IN – 5’10” – Sullivan
Kelley is a smaller guard who is incredibly quick with the ball in his hands. He seems to always be hustling on the court and this allows him to make plays in all areas. He goes strong to the hole, and he knows how to protect the ball and finish through contact. He also has very good court vision on the drives, and he can knock down jumpers from all areas. Overall, it was an impressive performance by Kelley who should see a lot of attention from Division 3 coaches this fall and winter.
Will Lovings-Watts Will Lovings-Watts 6'5" | SF Jeffersonville | 2022 State IN – 6’5″ – Jeffersonville
Lovings-Watts has kind of slid under the radar in the state of Indiana as he hasn’t had the team success to catch a lot of eyes. However, he looked really good on Sunday. At 6’5″, he has unprecedented size and length at the point guard position that makes him nearly impossible to defend. He also has such good court vision that he gets his teammates open all game. There were at least two passes that he made that I think he was the only person in the gym that saw the window for the pass. Will holds offers from Bradley, Drake, and Wichita State right now, and I think he should see a couple more come his way during the rest of the summer.
A.J. Roseman A.J. Roseman 6'0" | PG Bishop Chatard | 2022 State IN – 5’11” – Bishop Chatard
Roseman was the best player on the floor for Chatard all weekend as he was making plays in every single game. He seems to always find the open spaces on the floor with his cuts. He is also always hustling and not afraid to put his body on the line. Shooting the ball, he was hitting from the outside and the mid-range very consistently. Roseman should be playing at the Division 3 level next season.
Carter St. John Carter St. John 5'10" | PG Bishop Chatard | 2022 IN – 5’11” – Bishop Chatard
St. John is another smaller guard who plays very pass-first. He is an outstanding passer and got his teammates involved consistently this weekend. Whether it is getting into the lane and kicking out or just in the normal offense, St. John always seems to make the right play. I would like him to become more offensive in the future, but it was still a solid weekend for St. John.
Jayden Thomas – 5’10” – Tindley
Thomas is a tough, scrappy guard who plays an extremely physical style of basketball. Despite not being one of the bigger guys on the floor, he plays like it. He hustles after everything and is very quick with the ball in his hands. He can also knock it down from the outside. Thomas is the type of player who is not going to be outworked, and he is going to be crucial for Tindley’s success this season.
Dayveon Turner Dayveon Turner 5'11" | PG Arsenal Tech | 2022 State IN – 6’0″ – Arsenal Tech
Turner has grown a little bit since last season, and this has helped him throughout the spring and the summer. He plays as the lead guard and can see the court well, but the best part of his game has to be his pull-up jumpers. He can pull up at the top of the key from full speed and hit the shot no matter what. I think he was 4-4 on those shots in this one. He always looks for the mid-range rather than the triple, but he can also be extremely tough in the lane. Turner is going to make a college coach at Division 2 or NAIA level very happy in the future.
