There was tons of talent on every court and many games went down to the wire, and with so much talent we’ll have to break the standouts up into multiple pieces. Here’s a look at part one of the 16U standouts, with a look at some of the top players from the DMV and the midwest.

Jacoi Hutchinson Jacoi Hutchinson 6'3" | CG IMG | 2023 State #101 Nation FL | 6’2” WG | Team Takeover
Hutchinson is part of a young core at DeMatha that should start to break out here in the next few years if they stay together, and he was the guy who stepped up big in all of the close games for Takeover. The 6’2” guard is a talented shot creator and maker who can take over basketball games with his microwave scoring ability from all over the court. He’s crafty around the rim, he can create space and make shots from multiple levels and he isn’t overly selfish as he can make plays for others off the bounce as well.
Deshawn Harris-Smith | 6’4” WF | Team Takeover
The gritty leader of this Takeover team, Harris-Smith is the type of guy that has all the intangibles to be an elite level glue guy at the next level. At 6’4” he’s strong and athletic and he takes pride in doing the dirty work whether it’s defending the other team’s best player, rebounding in traffic over bigger guys or fighting for 50-50 balls to give his team extra possessions. He’s great in transition with his ability to finish above the rim, and he continues to improve on his ability to get to the rim in isolation situations and make shots from deep when he’s left open.
Jason Moore Jason Moore 6'6" | PF DeMatha | 2023 MD | 6’7” PF | Team Takeover
Moore is the younger brother of Villanova guard Justin Moore and is a highly rated football player on the national scene, but he showed he could be a division one basketball player as well with his size and production in the paint as he was one of Takeover’s most consistent guys this past weekend. The 6’7” forward has great feet in the post, and that footwork mixed in with his strength and ability to bully guys makes him an easy bucket when he catches it on the block. He plays hard on both ends, he has good touch out to 18 feet and he’s very consistent and concise with his touches in the paint.
Paul Dual | 6’5” CG | Houston Hoops
Dual was one of my favorite hoopers from this weekend because the Bush High School product was a walking mismatch with his size and ability to play on the basketball. At 6’5” with long arms, Dual looks like he’d be relegated to the wing and playing off the ball, which he showed he can do, but he was also fantastic when initiating the offense, handling it in transition and making plays for others. He’s a true three level scorer off the bounce and can get to his spots and make tough shots over defenders, and he’s a versatile defender as well that can guard multiple positions and impacts the game across the board.
Jakobe Smith | 6’4” WF | Houston Hoops
Smith was the shot maker for this Houston Hoops group when I watched them, as he showed the ability to get hot and ring off multiple shots from deep when his team needed him to. At 6’4” he looks like he’s still growing and already has good size on the wing, and he’s excellent working off the ball and coming off screens, and he can make shots from deep on the move. He has deep range and good form from the feet up, and when they needed to make a run it was his shooting that would usually do it.
Ty Beston | 6’4” PG | Houston Hoops
Beston is an intriguing point guard out of George Ranch High School that has a lot of tools that will translate to the next level in a couple of years. The first thing you notice about him is his good size at the position, and his ability to handle smaller guards pressuring him to get the ball up the floor. He’s a good decision maker off the bounce, he can make shots from multiple levels and he has good feel and instincts on both ends of the floor.
Omaha Biliew | 6’8” F | Mokan Elite
Biliew is a nationally ranked prospect out of Waukee High School in Iowa and he is chock full of long term potential with a lot of productive traits to him right now as well. Physically and athletically he’s superior to his peers as he’s able to play well above the rim and make plays on both ends of the floor, he’s versatile and can play multiple positions and he impacts the game in every way you can think whether it’s scoring, defending, rebounding or making plays off the bounce. The 6’8” forward already holds offers from numerous Big 10 and Big 12 schools, and the fact that he’s just now tapping into his potential is going to be scary moving forward.
Bryson Warren | 6’3” CG | Mokan Elite
Warren is another highly touted prospect already out of Little Rock Central in Arkansas, and he’s likely going to be one of the top players in Arkansas over the next few years. He’s a strong and athletic combo guard that can play on the ball and get in the lane to make plays for others, but he’s also a gifted shooter that can move off the ball and light it up from deep. He’s a guy who can run the show or play with another point guard on the floor, and he’s a natural leader who can be looked at down the stretch to make plays.
Kennard Davis Jr. | 6’5” F | Mokan Elite
Davis was Mokan’s Swiss-army knife guy as he’s very versatile offensively at his size with his ability to make shots from the perimeter and bang on the glass in the paint. He’s a strong guy who can get downhill and play through contact, and he isn’t afraid to get physical on either end of the floor. He’s a mismatch nightmare with his inside-out ability and was consistent throughout the weekend for them.
