Continue ReadingMonday marked the opening four games of the St. John Bosco Summer Classic. The event features 16 total teams, including some of the best programs and players the SoCal has to offer. In this piece we take a closer look at the standout performers from Day 1 of the event.
Brandon Releford, 2022, Compton – Releford will likely take the reins at the point guard spot from now-graduated Patrick Johnson and the rising senior looked solid in that role Monday. The 6-foot-1 guard has a strong frame that allows him to be physical on the ball, resulting in paint touches and kick-out opportunities for his teammates. Releford played mostly off the ball in his high school career up to this point, but he showed flashes of good decision-making in both the transition and half-court settings.
Aden Casarez Aden Casarez 6'1" | SG Fountain Valley | 2022 State CA-S , 2022, Fountain Valley – It took the Barons’ offense a bit to get going in the second half and they found their spark in Casarez, the team’s top three-point shooter. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard is deadly from behind-the-arc with his feet set and time and space and knocked down four triples en route to a team-high 14 points in a win over Santa Fe.
Roddie Anderson Roddie Anderson 6'1" | PG Fountain Valley | 2022 State CA-S , 2022, Fountain Valley – Anderson continues his ascent into the conversation of best point guards in SoCal thanks in large part to his willingness to compete and play hard on both ends. Anderson is a physical defender who puts consistent pressure on the ball handler to create turnovers. When defending off the ball, Anderson’s instincts and speed allow him to shoot passing lanes for steals. The 6-foot-1 senior-to-be scored 12 points with five rebounds and five steals in the Barons’ win over Santa Fe.
Lolo Rudolph, 2024, St. Augustine – Rudolph controls the pace and tempo of the game as well as you could want from your floor general. The 5-foot-10 rising sophomore plays with an IQ well beyond his years, has blurring speed in transition and that, combined with his strong frame, makes it tough to keep him from getting two feet in the paint and drawing a help defender. Rudolph is most comfortable as a table setter for teammates, but does finish well around the basket.
Jaden Matingou Jaden Matingou 6'3" | CG St. Augustine | 2023 State CA-S , 2023, St. Augustine – Matingou is long, wiry off-guard who is much more bouncy than the last time we saw him play. The 6-foot-2 rising junior has good feel when moving without the ball and finding space where he can operate offensively. Matingou is a fluid athlete with a smooth handle and ability to create shots for himself off the dribble.
