Big time matchups are slated with big time players. Let’s take a look at the Kansas side of things and some guards to watch take the court.
Free State
Mozae Downing-Rivers Mozae Downing-Rivers 6'3" | PG Free State | 2022 State KS , 6’4 PG, 2022: The big bodied and athletic lead guard will be in action. Has great court vision, command of the offense, downhill playing ability, and an excellent distributor of the basketball. A high level prospect in the 2022 class, and one of the top point guards in the state.
Cooper Jackson Cooper Jackson 6'0" | PG Free State | 2022 State KS , 6’1 Guard, 2022: A high motor guard who can play both the one and the two. Solid shooter off the catch and crafty with the ball in his hands. A high level on ball defender and causes havoc on the defensive end of the floor.
Jordan Brown Jordan Brown 6'2" | SG St Francis | 2022 State GA , 6’3 SG, 2022: A new piece to a loaded puzzle at Free State, Brown will look to bring his shooting ability and scoring prowess to an already high powered back court. His length and perimeter scoring added with Downing and Jackson should make them tough to guard.
Piper
Jaron Briggs Jaron Briggs 6'4" | CG Piper | 2022 State KS , 6’4 Guard, 2022 (Pictured): Has been riding a hot hand through the spring with the KC Spurs, his improved outside shooting ability to go along with athleticism and paint scoring adds a viable piece to his overall game. Great size at the guard spot. Is a very versatile perimeter player and is a great chess piece for Piper.
St James Academy
Brian Hawthorne Brian Hawthorne 6'2" | PG St. James | 2023 State KS , 6’3 Point Guard, 2023: One of my favorite 2023 point guards, especially in terms of running an offense, getting teammates into spots, and being a heady playmaker. Good build for a point guard, solid vision, a consistent jumper, and strong with the ball. Has had a great spring with Drive 5 as well, so a player looking to continue his momentum throughout the summer.
Basehor Linwood
Trevor Mcbride Trevor Mcbride 6'2" | CG Basehor Linwood | 2022 State KS , 6’2 PG, 2022: Like previously mentioned Jackson, McBride is a high motor and tremendous defender in the back court. Also becoming really tough to guard on ball screens, changing pace, attacking switches, and making plays in the mid range or at the rim. Will have an expanded role this year and has had a really solid June. Moves extremely well off the ball as well.
Blue Valley Northwest
Joey Robinson Joey Robinson 6'1" | CG Blue Valley Northwest | 2022 State KS , 6’1 Guard, 2022: A great leader in the backcourt which will allow him to transition well with the new staff who have to love his competitiveness right off the jump. Big time shooter of the basketball off the dribble an the catch, can handle pressure in the back court, and can execute in the half court.
