It was great just being in the gym and seeing kids compete for their high school teams for the first time in over a year. Here’s a look at some of the top performers we saw in Week 1.
Lamar Washington Lamar Washington 6'4" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State #128 Nation AZ (2022 Jefferson)
Washington is our pick for player of the week – if only because of his sizzling 52-point performance against Wells on Friday. The 6-foot-4 point guard had his stroke going from three-point range, hitting nine threes, but also did the job by grabbing 11 boards and dishing out seven assists. Washington also scored 22 points at Jesuit in the season opener. We picked Washington as our pre-season 6A Player of the Year and everything so far is confirming our selection.
Marquis Cook Marquis Cook 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #6 Nation AZ (2023 Jefferson)
Cook had a good week, first posting a double-double against Jesuit and following that up with a triple-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists against Wells. The 6-foot-6 forward is simply a matchup nightmare on offense as he can not only use his length and athleticism to score inside but also step out, hit jumpers, and create off of the dribble. There’s a reason why he’s considered one of the top players in the nation in the Class of 2023 and he showed off some of those skills this week.
Dane Erikstrup Dane Erikstrup 6'10" | C Beaverton | 2021 State OR (2021 Beaverton)
We were excited to hear that Erikstup would be returning to Beaverton and would be eligible to play and heard about how his development had gone since last season. We saw that in action against Southridge as he not only scored inside but took his game outside of the arc and hit 3-for-4 from three-point range. He ended up posting a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double with a couple of blocked shots mixed in to boot.
Drew Larsen Drew Larsen 6'2" | CG Barlow | 2021 State OR (2021 Barlow)
Some of the most inquiries we got in week one was this – how did Barlow beat Central Catholic? The reason – Larsen. The 6-foot-3 wing had it going early and often against the Rams as he hit catch-and-shoot jumpers from the outside as well as create off the dribble and use his strength to finish around the hoop. He’s a solid student who is open to starting his college career at the JC level if it’s local to the PDX area.
Zane Bernhard Zane Bernhard 6'2" | CG Liberty | 2021 State OR (2021 Liberty)
Bernard is another senior we saw live for the first time this week and we came away intrigued. Liberty fought back from a 12-point margin at the half and the 6-foot-2 combo guard was a big reason why. He simply made plays on both ends of the floor by playing hard and exuded leadership – something his head coach Brian Martin said he’s worked hard to improve. Another solid student, Bernhard is looking for the right college opportunity and is keeping his options open.
