Things have changed, and while there are still point guards with that skill set, the definition of ’stereotypical point guard’ has changed. It’s time to start paying attention to the floor generals that do a little extra and don’t fit into a preconceived mold of a traditional point guard.
There were numerous variations of effective point guards and served the perfect purpose for their teams. Here’s a shortlist of the ones who stuck out the most.
CJ Johnson CJ Johnson 5'11" | PG Edmond Santa Fe | 2023 State OK , Tulsa Hawks (2023):
I remember watching Johnson during school ball this past season and thought he could be one of the best point guards in the state. After watching him play during this tournament, I believe he’s one of the best point guards in the state and on the top of the list in 4A. Expect him to continue to get better during summer ball this year.
Jacob Aquino, Mighty Kings (2023):
Looking at Aquino, you don’t assume that he’s going to torch your team for 24 points and nine assists. You don’t realize he’s putting up those numbers during the game until the damage is already done. Standing at 5-foot-10, Aquino isn’t physically imposing, but he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands. When I talked about the ’new era’ of point guards in basketball, Aquino was one of the players I was talking about, who can get his teammates the ball and be the leading scorer on his team daily.
Evan RomanNose, Oklahoma Runners (2023):
RomanNose, like Aquino, may have shocked some with the effectiveness in which he plays. He’s a more stereotypical point guard, extremely cerebral, that’ll make the right decision 90 percent of the time. In Saturday’s game, RomanNose dished out 12 assists and only committed two turnovers.
Makhi Hubbard, Colorado ICE (2023):
Hubbard was one of my favorite point guards because he was one of the most hectic for the opposing team to deal with on both ends of the floor. Not only did he record four steals, he dished out six assists while also getting to the basket with ease due to his swift style of play. Hubbard will be a nuisance for teams through the rest of this season, including during school ball for the next two seasons for Mesa Ridge High School.
