Sophomore All State First Team
Taison Chatman Taison Chatman 6'4" | PG Totino Grace | 2023 State #35 Nation MN of Totino-Grace (6’3 PG/SG). Chatman played both guard spots for the Eagles showcasing one of the most natural scoring abilities that you will see. Chatman started the year as the TG point, became one of the best 6th Men you will ever see, and scored 12.6 points a game for the second best team in Class AAA.
Jack Janicki Jack Janicki 6'4" | SG White Bear Lake | 2023 State #277 Nation MN of White Bear Lake (6’4 SG). Jack took major steps forward as a prospect and a player this year scoring 20 points a game for the Bears against a tough slate of teams. WBL struggled down the stretch but Jack did help the team to a win over 2nd place in state finisher CDH this year.
CJ O’Hara CJ O’Hara 6'4" | SF Park Center | 2023 State #285 Nation MN of Totino-Grace (6’3 SG). One of the hardest working, steadier players in the state. CJ plays a Sacar Anim style of game only more so at the two spot as opposed to the forward spot. CJ was a top defender on his team AND he led his team in scoring both in points per game and total points.
Max Shikenjanski Max Shikenjanski 6'2" | PG Stillwater | 2023 State #288 Nation MN of Stillwater (6’2 SG). Max’s ability to playmake kept the Ponies in several games against tough teams and helped them earn wins over Park and White Bear Lake. He scored a sophomore Class AAAA high 24 points a game this season.
Nasir Whitlock Nasir Whitlock 6'2" | PG Delasalle | 2023 State MN of DeLaSalle (6’0 PG). Whitlock had a great season playing duel roles as the ball handler/scorer. Earlier in the year Whitlock was actually the DeLaSalle leading scorer and when Cade Haskins Cade Haskins 6'6" | SF Delasalle | 2021 State MN got going at a higher rate, Whitlock scored his 14 a game while also creating for Cade and others. Nasir helped push the Islanders to the final four of Class AAA.
Sophomore All State Second Team
Matthew Bothun Matthew Bothun 6'9" | PF St. Francis | 2023 State MN of St. Francis (6’8 PF). When it comes to guys that I think might be flying under the big prospect radar, Bothun comes to mind. Skilled, agile, big, and very productive this year, Both averaged 19 points a game for the 12-7 Saints. A guy I think could blow up this summer as there looks to be a lot of room to grow.
Sam Musungu of Andover (6’0 PG). Sam had a fantastic season including the memorable Spring Lake Park game where he exploded for 30. That win and the Osseo win seemed to be trademark victories as Sam led the team with 17 points a game this year.
Chiddi Obiazor of Eden Prairie (6’5 SF). The Eagles were almost a totally new team but still tough and competitive. Chiddi’s 16 points a game versus a tough schedule led the Eagles to a better year than many thought they would have.
Will Underwood Will Underwood 6'0" | PG Mahtomedi | 2023 State MN of Mahtomedi (6’2 PG). The Zephyrs were much better than expected this year going 13-5 and a huge reason for that was the monster season that Underwood had. Will scored 24 a game.
Nolan Winter Nolan Winter 7'0" | PF Lakeville North | 2023 State #98 Nation MN of Lakeville North (6’8 PF). Winter was the skilled piece scoring 11-12 points a game (plus a top rebounder for the Panthers) in the South Suburban. Winter is a top prospect in the 2023 class and a key figure as North moves back into state contendership.
Sophomore All State Second Team
Gannon Ahrendt of Luverne (6’3 SF). Gannon had some huge scoring nights leading to his 23 point, 8 rebound a game average for Luverne who won 14 of 18 games. Ahrendt’s emergence along with a big group of seniors made Luverne a contender and a big surprising team this season.
Patrick Bath of Totino-Grace (6’9 PF). Bath came off the bench and gave the Eagles seven points and 5/6 boards a contest. Bath showcased strong agility at his size, has a nice touch facing at his size, and surely showed that he is going to be a highly recruited frontcourt 2023 talent.
Jalen Cain Jalen Cain 6'3" | SF Minnetonka | 2023 State MN of Minnetonka (6’3 SG). Cain was one of the top underclassmen scorers in the state of Minnesota this year leading the Skippers at 18 a game. Few could stay in front of the strong, skilled wing.
Tommy Humphries Tommy Humphries 6'5" | SF Totino-Grace | 2023 State #283 Nation MN of Totino-Grace (6’3 SG). Humphries scored 10 plus points a game for one of the best teams in the state. Humphries is a long wing that scored both in transition and in the halfcourt set.
Boden Kapke Boden Kapke 6'11" | C Holy Family | 2023 State #153 Nation MN of Holy Family (6’10 C). The most unstoppable underclassmen big in Class AA basketball was Kapke. The Fire made it to the section final with Kapke scoring 16/17 a game inside while also averaging nearly a double-double.
Sophomore All State Fourth Team
Zach Anderson Zach Anderson 6'6" | SF Martin County West | 2023 State MN of Martin County West (6’6 SF). Anderson is one of the best prospects in Class A basketball regardless of class. He’s got great size but ball skills to go with it allowing him to play all five spots in Class A hoops. Averaged 23 points a game.
Cooper Drews Cooper Drews 6'4" | SF Princeton | 2023 State MN of Princeton (6’4 SG). Drews is an excellent defender, a quality shooter, and one of the better all around players in his class overall. Averaged 16 points a game for an 18-2 team.
Ben Kopetzki Ben Kopetzki 6'0" | PG Andover | 2023 State MN of Andover (5’10 PG). Andover put together a really nice season winning 13 of 19 games. Andover got 15 points a game from Kopetzki and he teams with Musungu to form a great backcourt.
Alex Mattes Alex Mattes 6'3" | SG East Ridge | 2023 State MN of East Ridge (6’3 SG). The Raptors won a dozen games this year and Mattes was often the second go-to player on the offensive end. Alex scored a respectable 12 plus a game in SEC play this season.
Isaac Matti Isaac Matti 6'1" | SG Hayfield | 2023 State MN of Hayfield (6’2 SG). The top sophomore in Section 1A averaged 17 points a game and helped his team win a state title. Isaac made 45 percent of his attempts this year (37 percent of his threes) while giving the champs 3.2 assists a game.
