But for others, spring tournaments is the chance to show what they’ve got: Here are a few small school guards with a big opportunity (listed in alphabetical order):
Carter Goodson, 6-foot-3 post, Western Kansas Elite, Scott City HS:
Goodson is a big-bodies, powerful post player. He has a soft jump hook that he knocks down after burying an opposing big in the deep post. He has a good face up game, and gentle touch and accuracy on his mid-range jumper. He goes after boards at both ends and converts a lot of follows.
Samuel Gros, 6-foot-4 post, SSA Hoops Elite Blue, Frankfort HS:
Gros was a standout for Frankfort last winter, and now he’s showing his talents for SSA Blue. He has a quick turnaround jumper that he hits after posting up. He makes athletic cuts through the lane, and can catch and score on the move. He’s a pesky defender who gets his hands on a lot of entry passes and menaces a lot of shots in the lane.
Austin King Austin King 6'1" | SF Udall | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-6 post, Midwest Magic Elite – Resa, Udall HS (pictured):
King is a very big post. He’s solidly built and has long arms. He is able to overpower smaller posts in the lane, and powers the ball up in traffic. He plays through contact, and gets after rebounds in a crowd. For his size, King runs the floor really well. His athleticism leads to a lot of follow scores.
Raef Osterhaus, 6-foot-3 post, Showtime, Centralia HS:
Effort is the standout quality of Osterhaus’ game. He defends in the post with power and goes after shooters who penetrate the lane. He blocks shots with his reach and anticipation. He has the size and physicality to battle posts from every size of program.
Charlie Russell Charlie Russell 6'4" | PF Trego | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, Western Kansas Elite, Trego HS:
Toughness and willingness to do dirty work wins over a coach’s heart. That’s why Russell is on the floor, and why he makes such a big impact. He has versatility to his game, making highly skilled moves in the midrange, dropping jumpers and effective passes when facing the goal. He attacks the rim on offense, goes hard after every ball in the air. Russell also has pesky hands when the ball is possessed by an opposing big.
