Continue ReadingThe Pennsylvania Sports Writers recently released the 2020-21 All-State Boys Basketball selections and to say that southeastern Pennsylvania was well represented is an understatement. To be honest, prospects from this region of the Keystone State dominated the all-state teams.
Over the next week, we will review which players from SEPA made the various all-state teams and include a quick review of each prospect’s game. We will begin this series today with a look at the southeastern PA prospects who were selected to the Non-PIAA (aka “prep schools”) first and second team all-state squads.
Non-PIAA All-State Basketball Selections:
1st Team:
Jordan Longino Jordan Longino 6'5" | CG Germantown Academy | 2021 State #67 Nation PA – 6’1” / Senior / Germantown Academy / Combo Guard: Longino (2020-21 State POY) is widely considered one of the top guards in the state (2x Inter-Ac POY and 2019-20 Class 4A State POY) and nationally he is a Top 50 ranked 2021 prospect. He only enhanced his insane resume here in 2021. This winter the elite 3-level scorer hit for 21.9 ppg. Highlights from his senior campaign feature two 30 point outbursts as well as 27 points (3 threes) vs. Malvern Prep and 26 points (3 threes) vs. Episcopal Academy. Longino (Villanova commit) continued to add to his trophy case this season when he passed Alvin Williams (Villanova / Toronto Raptors) to become the all-time leading scorer in GA history. Longino ends his storied career at Germantown Academy with 1,763 points.
Jameel Brown Jameel Brown 6'4" | SG Westtown School | 2022 State #180 Nation PA – 6’4” / Junior / Haverford School / Combo Guard: Brown’s sophomore year was shut down by a broken wrist. He returned this winter fully healed and playing with a chip on his shoulder. All the elements of Brown’s elite game were on display this season — long range shooting, high basketball IQ, outstanding work on the boards and off-the-charts athleticism. Once again this season Brown displayed the unique ability to take over a game without forcing the action or playing hero ball. He averaged 21.7 ppg to go along with 8 rpg. and 3 apg. He posted 20+ in numerous games this season, but two efforts in particular really standout: his 23 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in a win over Malvern Prep and 29 points (3 threes) in a double OT loss to Germantown Academy. Brown was committed to Purdue, but recently reopened his recruiting process.
Gabe Dorsey Gabe Dorsey 6'6" | SF The Hill School | 2021 State #134 Nation PA – 6’6” / The Hill School / Senior / Combo Guard: An elite lefty shooter, Dorsey is automatic from anywhere on the court. That shooting ability earned him a second straight all-state selection. Dorsey, who signed with Vanderbilt, simply dominated Mid-Atlantic Prep League. During the 2020-21 season he averaged 15.5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per night. Dorsey drained threes at a 40% clip for the second straight year and ends his career as the most accomplished 3-point shooter in Hill School history. Dorsey also scored over 1,000 points in his distinguished career.
Ed Holland Ed Holland 6'5" | SF Friend's Central | 2021 State PA – 6’5” / Friends Central / Senior / Wing: Unfortunately for the Holland and the Phoenix their Covid season was reduced to a mere five games. However this elite wing prospect made the most of his limited game action by averaging 25.4 points; 11.6 Rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Holland who this off season added 20+ pounds of muscle, finished his FCS career with 961points. If FCS would have played a full schedule in 2020-21, its likely Holland would’ve finished with nearly 1,300 career points. The strongest aspect of Holland’s game is his ability to attack the basket on the break or from the wing in the half court and then finish through contact. During the past season Holland displayed the ability to hit the 3-ball (40% on 3PAs) as well as a solid mid-range game. Additionally, he showed improved ability to create shots for himself off the dribble. The University of Pennsylvania signee boasts a 6’10” wingspan.
Dereck Lively II Dereck Lively II 7'1" | C Westtown School | 2022 State #3 Nation PA – 7’0” / Westtown / Junior / Center: An athletic, energetic and bouncy 7-foot prospect who has displayed great hands, Lively (10 ppg. & 11 rpg.) is one of top national prospects in the Class of 2022. For the last two years Lively has shown that he can catch lobs / alley oops; finish in close with authority and convert on 2nd chance opportunities. However, this past winter his game went to the next level. He premiered an improved jump shot that now makes him a threat in the mid-range as well as the pick and pop game. He even drained the occasional three ball. On defense, Lively continues to be an elite rim protector and excels at clearing the defensive boards. Honestly, there is no limit to his upside.
Jalen Warley Jalen Warley 6'4" | CG Westtown School | 2021 State #25 Nation PA – 6’5” / Westtown / Senior / Combo Guard: Warley is committed to Florida State and the Seminoles are getting a very talented combo guard with a high basketball IQ. Warley is excellent at the pick-n-roll game and can play in transition. He can beat a defender off the dribble for a bucket or for a kick it out to an open shooter. In 202-21 Warley posted a stat line of 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists per game vs national level competition. Warley’s 30 points, 6 rebounds, 5 dimes in a win over National Christian Academy (MD) was the standout performance of his senior season. Warley finished his Westtown career with 1,084 points.
2nd Team:
Quin Berger – 6-1 / Junior / Westtown / Combo Guard: A sweet shooting (70% on FGAs & 40% on 3PAs) backcourt player who can burn at either guard spot, Berger is the son of Westtown Head Coach Seth Berger, so obviously he has a solid basketball IQ. This winter the youngest Berger (older brother TJ plays for Univ. of San Diego) could be counted on for 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 dimes per night. He also proved to be an effective floor general who rarely turned the ball over. Back in March, Berger turned heads with an 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists performance vs Rock Top Academy (PA).
Rahdir Hicks Rahdir Hicks 6'0" | PG Malvern Prep | 2021 State PA – 6’0” / Senior / Malvern Prep / Point Guard: A two-time 1st Team All-Inter-Ac selection, Hicks capped his MP career with a great senior season (15.8 ppg). Highlighting Hicks’ final season was a 23 point night in a win over Germantown Academy as well as a 24 and 10 double-double (plus 7 assists) vs arch rival Haverford. Hicks has exceptional ball handling skills that allow him to get into the lane for lay-ins or pass out to open teammates on the perimeter. A true floor general, Hicks limits his mistakes and can direct a team in the half-court. He has also shown the ability to hit from long range. His offensive production cannot be missed (1,190 career points). Still, it should also be noted that over the last four years, Hicks (Committed to Towson) earned a reputation as one the fiercest perimeter defenders in the Philly area.
Ny’Mire Little Ny’Mire Little 6'4" | PG Westtown School | 2021 State PA – 6’4” / Senior / Westtown / Combo Guard: Little (16 ppg.) is a physical guard who uses his powerful frame to his advantage of matchups at both ends of the floor. On offense he can play the point where he can bully most defenders with aggressive, contact filled playmaking off the bounce. He can also play a drive and kick to open shooters (4 apg.) style of lead guard. When he slides to the two-guard, Little can knock down threes (43% from deep this past season) as he proved when he shot 10 of 18 from deep on his way to 40 points against Rock Top Academy (PA). At the other end of the floor, his size and strength allow Little to defend multiple positions and rebound well (4 rpg.). Little is committed to the Univ. of Albany.
Mushin Muhammad – 6’3” / Sophomore / Germantown Friends / Combo Guard: A long and quick leaping prospect, Muhammad excels at finishing at the rim. He can get to the tin on the fast break or in the half-court by using the bounce. Muhammad has displayed flashes of a mid-range game as well. Muhammad’s 3-point shot improved greatly this winter and when he is knocking down treys, this prospect was very difficult to guard. In a Covid limited 2020-21 season his high scoring game of the year was a 21 point effort vs Friends Select in which he shot 8-14 from the field and 2-3 from deep; grabbed 7 rebounds; and hit the game winner with 4 seconds remaining. Muhammad finished his sophomore year with averages of 15 ppg,; 6 rpg.; and 2 apg. On the grassroots circuit he plays for Philly Pride Gold.
Onyekachi “Kachi” Nzeh – 6’9” / Junior / George School / Forward: During a highly curbed 2020-21 season (Only 5 games.), “Kachi” still terrorized foes in the paint at both ends of the floor. An athletic and long prospect, “Kachi” is a true interior big man who scores in close and dominates the glass. “Kachi” had some impressive performances this winter: 21 points vs. Shipley School and a 17 and 14 double-double against Germantown Friends. “Kachi” has already received scholarship offers from Hofstra, Creighton, LaSalle, TCU, Bryant, Siena and New Mexico State. He has also drawn interest from Michigan, Harvard and Princeton. The scary part is that the Covid shortened season was just his second year of high school basketball. On the grassroots circuit he plays for the NY Rens.
Fran Oschell – 6’7” / Senior / Malvern Prep / Power Forward: The long and skilled forward proved to a very capable No. 2 option for the Friars (14 ppg.). Oschell provided the MP lineup with a valuable stretch-4 style player who can hit the three or play on the interior. He produced 18 pts in a win over Episcopal Academy and then 20 vs Germantown Academy. Oschell also posted a 13 points and 13 boards double-double in a win over Haverford. He wrapped up his senior hoops season with three straight games in which he contributed 16 or more points for the Friars. Another athlete who excels in two-sports, Oschell is committed to Duke for baseball.
