It was a late season match up between two teams preparing for what is expected to be something resembling a playoff in Northern California. Palma a multiple PCAL Champion sporting a 8-0 record coming into this game against St. Francis a WCAL contender. In what turned out to be a big win for Palma 65-60. This could give them a boost of confidence going forward. Here’s our observations from the game.
Top Performer in the Game:
Aaron Garibay Aaron Garibay 6'0" | CG Palma | 2021 State CA-N 6’0 Unsigned Sr of Palma
Garibay is a polished player, who brings a certain amount of confidence to the court. He’s been a consistent contributor for the past couple of seasons at Palma. It was no different in this game. He has some craftiness with his handles, and movement with the ball. He’s an underrated passer. He has good vision, and sees the court well, his post entry passes, and finding cutters was noticeable. He has a nice step back when he uses it. He delivered key buckets late in the game. Five 3’s, to lead all scorers with 24pts.
Top Underclassmen:
Joseph Finley Joseph Finley 6'7" | PF Palma | 2022 State CA-N 6’6 Forward of Palma. 2022
Finley was a key performer throughout the game with his play inside. The solid body player was active on both ends of the court with his rebounding and scoring. He converted shots around the basket, used a nice dribble drive from the high post area, he produced several strong put backs for, and one buckets with his rebounding. He had good defensive presence in the paint, 9pts in the 4th qtr. He produced a double-double. 24pts, 10rebs.
Vince Barringer Vince Barringer 6'7" | PF St. Francis | 2022 State CA-N 6’6 Forward of St. Francis. 2022
Barringer was the leading scorer for his team, putting in good work as a perimeter player with a good shot from beyond the 3. He moves well on the perimeter looking to catch and shoot or drive it. He can handle it well enough to get to his spots, the short corner, or somewhere in the mid-range. He was a contributor on the boards. He finished with 15pts, 7rebs. Three 3ptrs.
Harlan Banks Harlan Banks 6'3" | CG Saint Francis | 2022 State CA-N 6’2 CG, of St. Francis. 2022
The athletic Banks is showing more confidence and balance each time he steps on the court. He’s one of the best defenders on the court when he’s locked in. His offensive production is on the upswing. He’s improved his jump shot out to the three, his ball handling, and decision making with the ball are improved. He’s also a capable rebounder from the guard spot. 11pts.
Nate Jean Pierre Nate Jean Pierre 5'10" | PG Palma | 2022 State CA-N PG/CG 5’10 of Palma 2022
Pierre has a good feel for the game, he stays in the flow, and takes what the defense gives him, with that being said, he’s a solid ball handler, and distributor with good vision who can run the offense, plus get his own shot. He has a good first step on the initial attack. He penetrates, collapses the defense and will find open teammate for shots. He can be a disruptor on defense, good hands, and foot speed. 4pts, 2stls.
Glue Guy:
Ryan Roggio 6’1 Guard of Palma 2022
He doesn’t have the look of a glue guy, he fit that role in this game. He was one of the most productive players on the court without scoring a single point. Roggio started. He’s a ball mover, delivering good passes, that resulted in buckets. He hustled on defense getting a few deflections with his long arms causing turnovers, and grabbed a few rebounds, with 4asts.
New Comers/ Off The Bench:
Colton Amaral 5’9 Guard of Palma 2022
He was a solid contributor and one of the first off the bench in this game. Amaral’s a tough competitor who looks to be aggressive with the ball. He did a good job of knocking down corner 3’s in this game, and taking it strong inside off the dribble. He made good passes to the post and to open shooters. He moves without the ball. His on ball defense was solid. 11pts.
Brylan Lundy 6’3 Wing of St. Francis 2022
He didn’t score a lot but showed he could get a bucket, he hit a short corner jumper for 2pts. He’s athletic with good speed, and movement on the court. He has long arms to rebound, and take up the passing lanes, he did a good job on defense getting 3 steals. I’ll see more of him.
T.J Motil 5’8 Shooting Guard of St. Francis:
A sharp shooter off the bench, sets his feet quickly, has a quick release up top. He looks to shoot it when open, no forces, if not open he moves it quickly. A nice floater. Three 3’s in the game 11pts.
