Continue ReadingWe’ve done three parts of our 2022 top performers, but now it’s time to move to 2023 prospects. This is an important summer for a lot of these prospects, as we’re starting to get a better sense for what level of prospects they are. This tournament gave us a much clearer look at where these players stand currently against each other.
Austin Parks Austin Parks 6'9" | C St. Mary's Memorial | 2023 State #166 Nation OH , 6’9 C St Mary’s Memorial 2023 Ohio Buckets-Turf: Parks is a high major, potential top 100 nationally ranked big just kinda hiding in plain sight. The worst kept secret in Ohio is officially out of the bag as Parks dominated against All Ohio Red in a huge victory for the program. Parks does his work early and gets great position in the post. The Ohio Buckets also run a really nice lob play for Parks that he threw down four dunks off of in the two games I watched. Parks should be getting attention from national recruiting services yesterday, but he might have to wait because it seems like no national service caught wind of his performances this weekend. There are a handful of people who know just how special Parks is and high major programs will likely start offering the second they can see him in person.
Michael Greenlee Michael Greenlee 5'10" | PG Toledo Central Catholic | 2023 State OH , 5’10 PG Toledo Central Catholic 2023 Ohio Buckets-Turf: Another player who absolutely shined in the Buckets victory over All Ohio Red, Greenlee is really the only true ball handler for the Buckets right now. Greenlee makes great decisions with the basketball and wasn’t phased by the traps and pressure that was thrown at him. I loved the pace Greenlee played with this weekend and he scored at a better clip than I saw during the high school season. Greenlee is a major stock riser due to his play this past weekend.
Gabe Cupps Gabe Cupps 6'1" | PG Centerville | 2023 State #80 Nation OH , 6’1 PG Centerville 2023 Midwest Basketball Club 3SSB: Cupps plays up on the 17U roster and makes a big impact for his team. Cupps is basically a coach on the floor, soaking in what his father has been teaching him. Cupps plays the point guard position the way an old school mind loves to see, picking his spots and getting his teammates involved first. Cupps is a lights out shooter from the outside and finds ways to score in the 5-10 foot range when rim protectors are in the paint. Cupps was held in check against Sean Jones Sean Jones 5'10" | PG Gahanna | 2022 State #102 Nation OH and All Ohio Red, but you’d expect any incoming Junior to take a few lumps playing against 17U EYBL squads. Cupps proved he can compete with the big boys this spring and is starting to receive some high major interest from colleges. I really hope people don’t overthink Cupps as a prospect, he’s a coaches dream and a winner.
Jabari Conway Jabari Conway 6'8" | C Bowling Green | 2023 State OH , 6’8 C Toledo St John’s 2023 Hopson Elite-Awls: Another 2023 prospect playing up on 17U, Conway really intrigued me with his play this weekend. Conway is a little raw on the offensive end, but he knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key in the one game I caught and ran the floor well. Conway is a prospect who certainly has a ways to go in terms of production, but the tools are there for him to be a great player down the road. Playing up an age group is also getting Conway adjusted to playing physically developed bigs, something that will help with his development as a player. There’s a lot to like about Conway and I’m very intrigued to see how he plays during his Junior season at Toledo St John’s.
Terrance Pankey Jr Terrance Pankey Jr 6'0" | PG Ursuline | 2023 State OH , 6’3 SG Youngstown Ursuline 2023 OBC: Pankey is a prospect I heard good things about, but due to his hometown locataion, I haven’t gotten a chance to see him play before this past weekend. Pankey was worth the hype, as the 6’3 shooting guard has a great first step and attacks the hoop with a lot of aggression. Pankey is a very impressive athlete and produced well Vs C2K Elite 16U. I’m still not sure how developed the jump-shot is, I don’t really remember Pankey taking many in the one game I saw. Pankey is a prospect I’m excited to continue to monitor his development as he matures the next couple years.
Cameron Grant, 6’6 PF Saint Edward 2023 OBC: Grant shot the ball at a very high level from the perimeter for OBC in their victory over C2K Elite. I was impressed with Grant’s ability to move without the ball and get himself open. Playing alongside Pankey and Justin Wypasek Justin Wypasek 5'10" | PG Strongsville | 2023 State OH , Grant was successful at knocking down looks from drive and kick plays. Saint Edward has a lot of talent returning next season and appears to be one of the top teams in Ohio next season. I expect Grant to play a solid role in that success.
