I know what I thought that I saw this weekend at the Prep Hoops Circuit’s Rumble In The Rapids. But what were other people thinking? I was interested, so I asked. I made the question a little specific by asking who the impressive point guards were at the event. Well, here are some names that were dropped frequently.
Jonathan Calmese (Big 3 Basketball 2024)
Calmese was mentioned a bit and I can see why. He has a lot of upside as a vertically quick lead guard. His combination of speed and handles could take him a long way.
Ethan Layton (LevelUp 2024)
Layton had a very solid game on Friday and continued to impress over the course of the weekend. He was at his best with the ball in his hands working off a solid screen. Layton put in work when the ball wasn’t in his hands as well. This resulted in openings for himself and his teammates.
Joseph Taylor (Athlete Headquarters 2024)
Taylor liked to rock his defender, get them to lean, and then go to the rim. He played downhill all weekend which resulted in finishes at the rim and soft floaters with touch. Taylor was physically strong and showed the toughness to play through contact in the lane.
Alex Trotter (Pride Roc 2024)
Trotter was a clutch player at Rumble In The Rapids. He buried 2 big free throws that helped Pride Roc defeat Code 313 in one of best games at the event. Trotter attacked the rim and didn’t waste a dribble getting there. He was efficient with the ball, yet showed explosiveness in his game.
Derrick Voltz Derrick Voltz 6'4" | CG Carrollton | 2022 State MI (EAT Athletics 2022)
Voltz is a big time basketball player and all around athlete. He’s a prolific scorer that can create his own look at the bucket if need be. Voltz scored from all 3 levels over the weekend. He’s developed into a terrific leader as well.
James Weaver James Weaver 5'10" | CG River Rouge | 2024 State MI (Code 313 2024)
Weaver continues to show a ton of skill and upside. He played downhill, yet rarely turned the ball over. Weaver didn’t force the action, doing a nice job recognizing good scoring opportunities and taking advantage of them. He was a good facilitator, putting teammates in position and hitting them with an accurate dish.
