Coach Lovell and his assistants had each player participate in drill work and scrimmage play to evaluate their skill level. Along with the seniors and other older prospects, there were a few rising juniors and sophomores that displayed high level basketball skill. I will take a look at few players who performed well during the day at ETBU.
Campbell White (6’0″ – Elysian Fields – 2022)
The guard from East Texas was one of the more entertaining guards playing at the ETBU prospect camp. His appearance may have one wondering why he is on the floor. After a couple of triops up and down, it is easy to see. White has the ability to handle the ball like any guard I have seen on a regular basis and has very good court vision. He sees plays before they happen and makes passes to highlight that. He can also stroke it from three as well. If he gets into a college program and he gets into better shape, a college will have a steal of a guard in White.
Nile Austin (6’0″ – Cypress Christian School – 2022)
Austin was one the of the impressive point guards at the ETBU prospect camp. The guard out of Houston was good in transition situations finding others running their lanes. He was also very good at getting into the paint and scoring. Austin can stroke it from three as well. Overall, he played like a well-rounded and smart guard who knows the right play to make. With his size and ability, Austin may be a guard who not only plays but excels at the Division III level.
Keesean Johnson (6’2″ – Ringgold High – 2022)
The rising junior from Ringgold was probably the best athlete I saw during my time at ETBU. He has some basketball skills he needs to refine. However, his raw athleticism is very attractive. Johnson was able to penetrate the paint. When he could not get to the rim, he has the ability to elevate over guards his size or smaller and get a clean look at the rim. He also seems to glide down the floor with or without the ball. Johnson has a load of potential. With his athleticism, he may be a steal for a school on the Division III level.
Fred’Travious Benjamin Fred’Travious Benjamin 6'2" | SG Green Oaks | 2023 State LA (6’1″ – Green Oaks – 2023)
Benjamin was the best player on a Green Oaks team that underachieved last season. At the prospect camp, it was easy to see that he has been in the gym working to improve since the season ended. Benjamin had little trouble getting to the rim and was very good finishing in transition. He also showed that he can be effective on the offensive boards when teammates miss inside or outside of the paint. Benjamin hurt the other defenses from 15 feet in most of scrimmage play. He has some definite tools that make him an interesting prospect to follow going forward.
Other prospects fromt the ETBU camp:
Robert Moreland (6’2″ – Grace Prep Academy – 2021)
Moreland had a very good day from behind the arc. He displayed range out to 25 feet and knows how to prepare early for looks. Did not see him put it on the deck much but if he can shoot it consistently like he did during camp, he might not have to.
Cade Wilson (6’6″ – Mabank High – 2022)
Another shooter from East Texas. Wilson has a deliberate release but he was accurate during the sessions I saw him. He can alter shots as well. Wilson should draw interest because of his height and shooting ability.
Christian Yates Christian Yates 6'4" | SF Green Oaks | 2022 State LA (6’4″ – Green Oaks – 2022)
Yates has a strong body and loves to take contact. Has a decent outside touch from deep and does not mind crashing the boards. He has not played in a year after leaving Huntington so his conditioning has to improve. However, he is a player to watch moving forward.
Colton Taylor (6’1″ – Lindale – 2021)
Lindale point guard who plays with a bit of swagger. Taylor can find guys in the half court or on the break and makes accurate passes. He will go after loose balls with reckless abandon as well. Taylor has a quick release and does not need much room to get his shot off. He knows his way around the court and can definitely play the one.
Coach Lovell has established himself in the basketball community and has turned programs into winners. If he eyes a prospect, believe that prospect can play.
Prospects will get the rest of this month to play with their travel clubs in Louisiana and Texas before team camps begin with their high school teams in June. Look for these players, and others, as they continue their summer efforts on the hardwood.
