The quick 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard isn’t doing track this year at Mountainside, instead focused on basketball and finding a spot for himself at the college level. Playing high-level AAU basketball last year helped him go down this path and he’s jumping at the chance to further impress college coaches with his play.
“Coming back here (to high school) it’s actually been a lot easier since I played last summer,” Mouzong said. “Playing over in Kansas and Oklahoma, the competition was a lot harder out there. I’ve gotten a lot better at being strong in the lane and I feel like my ball-handling in general is better. I’m being a leader and I have more confidence now.”
A natural athlete with great end-to-end speed, Mouzong has worked hard to improve not only his playmaking but also his perimeter shooting. Thanks to his play with International Elite on the AAU circuit last summer, schools such as Whitworth, Redlands, Bushnell, and a number of programs in the NWAC have been in touch with Mouzong. He made a campus visit to Whitworth but is staying open with his options.
“It was nice out there but I still haven’t decided anything yet,” Mouzong said. “I’m just seeing what the best opportunity is.”
Mouzong is hopeful some quality film generated from his play with Mountainside this year will help lead to the right spot for him. “I feel like we’re really good this year,” Mouzong said. “We’ve got faster players now who can do a lot more of everything instead of just sticking to rebounding or just shooting. I feel like I can make a lot of plays out there off the dribble – we’ve got a lot of shooters now so I just need to get a lot of people open.”
Mouzong currently ranks as the #55 player in the newly updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
