As much as he appreciates the individual accolades, the shifty 5-foot-9, 165-pound point guard is now hopeful for some team success with his Wells squad. The Guardians opened up the season with a league win over Cleveland and despite losses the next couple of games, Sewell likes what he sees going forward.
“It feels good and it’s been awhile since I’ve been with (my teammates),” Sewell said. “But I’ve been with them three years now and I think we got back together really quickly and we’re proving that we can do some stuff this year. We’re really locked in and we’re playing together and playing well. I’m proud of how far we’ve come since my freshman year.”
Sewell is noticably bigger physically and more confident taking the ball to the basket and finishing over bigger players. He was active both in working out and playing club basketball, first with Oregon Prospects and most recently with Elite 24.
“Playing competition out-of-state like in Arizona, Utah, and Cali, going up against taller more athletic kids was good,” Sewell said. “Now being back in Oregon, being able to do what I worked on all summer is fun. I really focused on my defense and getting stronger around the basket and I also worked on my shooting and ball-handling.”
Sewell has been the primary ball-handler for Wells (then Wilson) the past couple of years so playing with Elite 24 has given him a different experience. Playing alongside point guard Samaje Morgan Samaje Morgan 5'9" | PG Churchill | 2022 State OR , Sewell has shifted over to the two many times and it’s something he believes has really benefitted his game.
“That’s opened up a lot of new opportunities for me to score and not have the ball in my hands like I typically do,” Sewell said. “I love playing with him. He gets me the ball and I get him the ball and we just feed off each other pretty well. All the guys – I jelled super quick with them. It’s been a fun experience I’m looking forward to a big July.”
In July, Sewell hopes to catch the eyes of some college coaches. While he’s talked to Chaminade on the phone and has traded some emails with schools such as Seattle University and Sacred Heart, he notes that nothing too serious has happened quite yet.
“Obviously the dream is Division I but I’m open to anything – anyone that will take a chance on a 5-foot-9 Hispanic kid, man,” Sewell said. There aren’t many of those in college so anyone that will take a chance on me, I’ll be beyond blessed to play at the next level.”
Sewell knows a big year will help him reach his goals and he believes in his Guardians teammates. “The sky is the limit for us,” Sewell said. “If we come out and compete every night like we have been and I know we can, I think we’ll show people a lot of things last year. We’re coming out with a chip on our shoulders; these next four-to-five weeks are going to be crazy, just showing people what we can do and how we can play together as a team.”
Sewell currently ranks as the #23 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
