But don’t sleep on the aggressive 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard. The Mountainside junior showed what he could do this past off-season playing ball with both his A-Train Oregon Magic club squad and his high school teammates, and he’s ready to make his mark at the varsity level in 2021.
Cohen is coming off a stretch playing with A-Train Oregon Magic, where he showed the ability to score, both knocking down shots from long range as well as converting on drives to the basket.
“It was great with them,” Cohen said. “We were in a showcase in LA and went 2-2 and probably should have won every game, and we were in Idaho too and did pretty good over there. I’ve gotten a lot better at creating my shot and talking on defense, leading my team. I’m going to be taking a bigger role this year (at Mountainside) so that’s been my biggest priority.”
Cohen did sneak into a few games with the Mavericks last year on their run to just short of the state tournament. But he knew he needed to wait his turn and now he knows it’s his time. His goal is to play college ball and he’s ready to make an impression.
“I didn’t get many minutes last year since we had so many seniors,” Cohen said. “But with eight seniors leaving, I’ll get my chance this year and hopefully start talking to some college coaches. Whoever wants me, I’m just looking for the best opportunity to play.”
Because of the turnover in the Mountainside roster, head coach Dustin Hewitt’s team will also change the way they play. Cohen believes it will best suit his game. “Last year we were so big and this year is so different,” Cohen said. “We’ve got a lot of shooters and while we’re a lot smaller, it’s going to be fun. I’m excited.”
Cohen currently ranks as the #62 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings which was last updated in the fall.
