The tough 6-foot-3, 190-pound wing has taken his lumps the past couple of years at Lakeridge and it’s been tough for him to stand out. But the senior is staying positive about both this upcoming season and the opportunity to play at the college level, hoping that the work he put in this off-season will result in good results in both areas.
Since last season ended, Sheehan has mostly focused on building strength by basically living in the weight room while also improving on some individual skills. When he was able to play live again, he suited up with OBC and Oregon Prospects and saw some of the hard work he was putting in pay off. Sheehan used his strength to get to the hoop and finish and was able to knock down some jumpers when given some open looks.
“It was really nice to play because we hadn’t been able to play in Oregon for however long,” Sheehan said. “The experiences were great and I loved it. I’ve gotten a lot better with my ball-handling over this past year and I’ve been working more on being a vocal leader and mentally getting tougher.”
One area where Sheehan also excels in is the classroom. He boasts a GPA above a 4.0 and had been talking to a number of coaches at high-academic schools across the country, including what was his top choice in University of Chicago (unfortunately, he was not granted admission). While he is currently set with a school as a normal student in the event basketball doesn’t pan out, he remains open to getting a chance to play hoops at the college level.
“If an opportunity comes my way I’ll probably take it,” Sheehan said. “I’d like a high-academic D-III as I really want to focus on getting a good education so I can prepare myself for life after basketball. I’d like a good business program as I’m looking to get into accounting or finance; I have some relatives that have gotten into investment banking and that’s really interesting to me.”
One way Sheehan might be able to attract some attention is this upcoming season. Lakeridge, which hasn’t won a league game the last couple of seasons, does have a new man in charge in David Duong and Sheehan likes the energy and the change that’s taken place with the brand new leadership.
“It’s a short season and only six weeks, so my expectations are for us to get better and get competitive,” Sheehan said. “That past couple of seasons something I’ve seen that’s lacking is accountability. So I’m going to bring that to everything, holding other guys accountable while they keep me accountable.”
Sheehan is not currently ranked in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings but will be added in the next update.
