Mayhem in the Plex: Standouts- Part II
Cameron Canady (Team Devoted/Marcus HS- 2024) Cameron Canady is a guard with a versatile offensive skill set. Playing off the ball, Canady showed the ability to be a smart cutter and catch lobs if given space. When playing with the ball he displayed the ability to get in the lane and play make and also draw contact at a decent rate. In transition, Canady has hesitation dribbles to freeze defenders and get to the rim. In the half-court, he’s a talented passer with the ability to find guys whether he’s slashing or being a ball mover on the perimeter. Canady’s high IQ & versatile abilities makes him someone that fits well with other good players.
Willie Goodacre (YB33/Denton Guyer HS- 2024) Willie Goodacre may end up being a highly sought after football recruit as he is already on varsity as a freshman defensive lineman at one of the top high school football programs in Texas but his athletic gifts don’t stop on the gridiron. Goodacre is tough to deal with on the court with his combination of size, mobility for his size, toughness & relentlessness. He used his relentless to be a handful on the offensive glass. Once he gets two hands on the ball, nobody is taking it from him. Offensively, Goodacre is an excellent screen setter with his wide base and has a soft touch around the rim. He also showed glimpses of slashing fluidity that one might not expect from a player of his build. The best part of Goodacre’s game is how hard he competes every second he’s on the floor. Defensively, he was impressive when switched onto players seemingly quicker players than him. In those switching situations, he competed hard & never conceded to a supposed mismatch. He won far more battles than he lost. He takes competing seriously and plays to win every time he plays.
Elijah Guidry (North Houston Bandits/Houston MacArthur HS- 2024) Eli Guidry is a guard to watch over the next few years. He’s equipped with a tight handle and quick first step. Guidry likes to play off rhythm dribbles and has the potential to have a potent pull-up game. Guidry’s feel and comfort playing in the screen & roll game is more advanced than many at his age. He routinely made the correct read out the PNR and never forced passes that weren’t available. Guidry’s an unselfish player and should have and a good mix of scoring & playmaking as he continues to progress.
Tristan Martin (BYG Elite/McMillen HS- 2023) Martin fits the mold of a traditional high school big. He has long arms and a strong body for his age. Martin’s best skill is being a strong & consistent rebounder. His accurate outlet passes also stood out as a useful skill for his position. Against smaller teams, he proved to be a disciplined rim protector & projects as a solid post defender with his frame.
Derrick Morris Jr. (Hustle Hard Elite/St. Michael HS: Baton Rouge- 2023) Morris Jr. embodies the name of his grassroots squad. He seems to never run out of energy and his flying around the court screams at you literally & figuratively. Morris Jr. is a player that will defend guards on the perimeter and then fly to the rim to swat a player’s shot out of bounds & let them know about it. Morris Jr. is super quick and was a problem in the passing lanes- routinely getting steals off lazy passes. He’ll put his body on the line to save balls from going out of bounds and then jet past a defender to get to the rim & finish on the ensuing possession. Morris Jr.’s competitiveness is fun to watch and he stands out as soon as you walk into the gym.
