Dozens of teams showed up to compete in the tournament, and I was able to see a bunch of them in action at the Game On Sports Complex. I will be highlighting standout prospects from this past weekend throughout the week.
Here are some of the best scorers from the 16U and 17U divisions:
R.J. Chatman R.J. Chatman 5'10" | PG Sachse | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 5’10’’ Point Guard | BBSS National 2023 | Sachse HS – Chatman put the ball in the basket from the inside and the outside. The Sachse floor general shot the three ball well off the dribble when contested. He was also good when getting into the paint, displaying good body control as well as the ability to maneuver through traffic. This is one of those players who can consistently make tough shots.
Morgan Lane | 2023 | 6’0’’ Combo Guard | Oklahoma Swarm Elite 2023 | Edmond Santa Fe HS – Lane is wired to score. He was aggressive but smart with his approach, averaging 12 points per game, highlighted by a 20-point outing on Saturday. The 2023 guard plays with an edge, is a crafty scorer when attacking off the dribble, and can produce while playing on or away from the ball.
Chris Barnett | 2023 | 6’5’’ Small Forward | Fresno Flyers Elite 2022 | Elkins HS – Barnett has a good combination of size and athleticism, making him a dangerous guy around the basket. The Elkins forward made timely cuts and showed soft hands when playing off the ball. Like many guys on this list, he is more than just a scorer. That said, his point production was impressive this weekend, which included a 22-point performance.
Orion Irving | 2022 | 6’6’’ Power Forward | Texas Takeover 2022 Elite Greg | Lamar HS – Irving can get a bucket from a variety of spots. The 2022 forward scored on the block, off the dribble, in transition, and from beyond the arc. It’s tough to defend a guy with his size and build who can do all of those things, and that was the case in Fort Worth. The Lamar forward can seriously light it up once he gets it going from the field.
Dominic Turner | 2022 | 6’4’’ Shooting Guard/Small Forward | Oklahoma Eagles Elite 2022 | Cushing HS – Turner looked bouncy when attacking the basket, showing that he can finish above the rim with power or below it with finesse. The 6-foot-4-inch wing was also strong in the paint, following shots and converting second-chance opportunities. Beyond that, he shot the ball well from the outside, getting squared up whenever he let it fly from deep.
Adrian Campbell | 2023 | 6’1’’ Point Guard | Dallas Showtyme 2023 Black | T.A.C.A Storm – Campbell is a fluid scorer who is unbothered by contact when getting to the rim. He was outstanding at adjusting his body in the air, leading to some flashy layups with bodies all around him. The 2023 guard is a capable three-point shooter, but rarely settled for jumpers. He instead continuously got into the teeth of the defense.
Deuce Hardison | 2021 | 5’11’’ Point Guard | BYG Elite 2021 Black | Plano East HS – Hardison got it done from all three levels, displaying his versatility as a scorer. His shot-making off the dribble was excellent during the event. The Plano East lead guard was great when it came to creating for himself, utilizing his handle to free himself up and subsequently knocking down off-balanced jump shots both inside and behind the arc.
Noah Arnold | 2022 | 6’2’’ Combo Guard | Drive Nation Austin 2022 Red | McCallum HS – Arnold’s shooting from mid-range really caught my eye. He hit some really difficult shots while fading away from the hoop. The McCallum guard displayed good footwork and touch when operating in the post too. He mostly played off the ball this weekend, allowing him to focus on filling up the scoring column.
