Continue ReadingThe Prep Hoops Circuit returned to the Valley of the Sun this weekend for the Bash In The Desert. The event which featured 65 teams ranging from 15U to 17U took place at Inspire Courts in Gilbert Arizona. The event featured several players who excelled at so many different positions, it’s difficult to pigeonhole them into a specific one. In this article, we take a look at the top positionless players from the event.
Justin Shorts Justin Shorts 6'3" | SF Glenview Prep | 2022 State AZ 6’3 Westside Elite 2022 (featured image) – You could probably add running back to the list of Short’s positions. He’s the definition of a Bully, with his broad shoulders and powerful frame. What was so amazing about him this weekend, was his ability to play with agility and grace. Shorts made several nice 1 on 1 moves allowing him to separate from defenders. His frame allowed him to carve out space down low as well.
Erenzo Scroggins Erenzo Scroggins 6'4" | SF AZ Compass Prep Black | 2023 State AZ 6’2 AZ Select 2023 (#37PHA 2023) – This is the first I’ve written about Scroggins… It will not be the last. If he was an offensive lineman his grade would have been a 97 for the weekend. He defended, rebounded, scored in transition, dunked, and did everything short of driving the team to the gym. An ultimate high motor guy with silly athleticism Scroggins didn’t need a position to be dominant this weekend.
Collier Roberts Collier Roberts 6'3" | SF Foothill | 2023 State NV 6’3 All Vegas 2023 (#53PHN 2023) – Roberts was most effective when he was at the high post. He showed a crafty face-up game, using pump fakes, and hesitations to freeze defenders. He also wasn’t afraid to finish through contact or scrap down low for boards. All in all, it was a good weekend for the talented Sophmore.
Kaden Bennett 5’11 5280 Athletics 2024 – I only saw Bennett play 1 game, but sometimes that’s all you need. The freshmen already has an advanced frame, and he used it to bully people in transition. He played a little Point forward, handling and dishing, and was good when attacking the glass for offensive rebounds.
Ja’Kwon Hill 6’2 ABC New Mexico 2022 – Hill is one of the guys that shows up to the run, and just gets buckets. I would call him a quiet scorer, however, he had several big-time finishes throughout the weekend. He has speed and quickness, but also a knack for slivering through the hole and finishing at the rim.
Ausar Thompson 6’6 High Major 2022 – He could make this list simply on his defensive ability alone. You could make the argument that Thompson was the best perimeter and low post defender on the weekend. He locked up on ball and swatted several shots in to the stands as a help-side defender. If that wasn’t enough, he managed to create, penetrate, and score for his team.
