The 17U division had tough competition including the talented ’High Major’ team who included a possible future Hillcrest player for next year.
Here were some of the 17U standouts:
2021
Jaden Harris CG 6’3 Norcross/GA (High Major)
-A powerfully built combo guard is wildly under-recruited. He can score it from all levels and get to the cup with his sturdy frame but it is his shooting that sets him apart. He has deep range well beyond the 3pt line. He has a college ready body with wider shoulders and quick feet to stay in front of his man.
2022
Chance Westry SG 6’4 (High Major)
-One of the more athletic scorers in the West. His ability to get downhill is effortless. He is a way above the rim athlete and seems to explode off the ground. He has euro moves to go along with a nice layup package. He can make the catch-3 plus pull-up from mid-range. He works best from mid and in and is constantly attacking off the bounce. He is also a sneaky good play-maker. He is a possible candidate to attend Hillcrest next season.
Ausar Thompson CG 6’7 (High Major) (Pictured)
-A unique prospect with a special blend of size, athleticism and top-notch defending. He handles it and sees plays develop quickly. He makes things look easy on defense collecting steals in bunches but also defecting at least 5 balls per half with his unusual length and quickness. He will defend post players then defend a small jitterbug PG. He blocks shots, rebounds the ball and gets to the basket off the bounce. He has a quick second jump to rebound and will finish around the hoop with either hand. He announced yesterday that him and his twin brother Amen Thompson will be playing for Overtime Elite, which will become a professional HS league to play other like-players and play vs international players. You wonder if this will become the norm for the highest level players moving forward.
Tavionte Jackson Tavionte Jackson 6'1" | PG Las Vegas | 2022 NV (Hard 2 Guard 2022-2)
-One of the top passers on the West Coast who can constantly suck in the defense and drive it and kick straight into his teammates shooting pocket. His ability to get into small spaces is impressive with his yo-yo handle. He has an elite layup package with either hand and good body control. He rebounds the ball like a PF using his sturdy frame and huge wingspan. He uses the pick and roll to his advantage then bursts to the cup.
Isaiah Carr Isaiah Carr 6'11" | C Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (New Mexico D1 2022)
-A long and tall post player who has a nice touch around the rim with either hand and can stretch it out to the 3pt line. His best skill by a mile is his shot blocking ability. He is one of the better rim protectors on the West Coast. He must of had close to 8 versus the loaded High Major team. He rebounds well, runs the floor and is light on his toes.
Rickey Bradley Rickey Bradley 6'1" | PG Phhoenix Prep | 2022 State AZ (ABC NM 2022 National)
-Bradley made the game look easy last weekend. It has slowed down for him and he picks his spots to score or facilitate. He played the role of a bigger PG that weekend making plays consistently for teammates. He is very calm and controlled and has a subtle burst into the lane. Once he gets into the lane he finds post players or scores it through contact. He is a plus rebounder for position and makes perimeter jumpers with range.
William Benjamin Jr 6’1 CG (ABC NM 2022 Black)
-Deuce is an explosive guard who plays fast and controlled. He can play above the rim on the break plus dribble passed his defender and get to the cup or find a teammate. He can hit 3’s off the catch or pull and is very quick on the ball defensively using his athletic gifts. He recently received offers from New Mexico State and FIU and is one to track from New Mexico.
Ahamed Mohamed Ahamed Mohamed 6'0" | PG Apollo | 2022 State AZ (Factory)
-One of the top on-ball defenders and competitors. He will defend the full length of the court with great length to go along with his quick hands and feet. He is a consistent shooter off the pull and catch from mid to the 3. He keeps impressing each Prep Hoops tourney. One of those players you want on your team in crunch time.
