Sometimes though, guys can be seen if they can do something else. Maybe a guy can pass the ball and set up teammates. Or maybe someone does a lot off-ball with screens and movement. These 5 guys below all did things on the offensive end of the floor that made me feel they were worth recognition.
Jalen Overway Jalen Overway 6'8" | PF Holland Christian | 2022 State MI (MBA National 2022 Lakeside) 2022 6’8 C
Overway was absolutely incredible against Dayton Elite and Team Future last weekend. The 6’8 senior-to-be is as true of a big as you will find throughout the weekend. Back to the basket scorer that can work the defender on the block or simply shoot over the shoulder. Great footwork and utilized his size to overpower smaller defenders. Showed an ability to hit the midrange shot with a very high release. His ability to step out and shoot makes him even more of a dangerous prospect. D2 programs should know his name.
Myles Colvin Myles Colvin 6'5" | SG Heritage Christian | 2023 State #51 Nation IN (INB 2023 Elite) 2023 6’5 WG
Colvin’s Indy Nets struggled against 94 Feet Elite due to their athleticism across the board. Colvin himself though may have been one of the more intriguing prospects throughout the game due to his pure talent only being a junior. He possesses great size on the perimeter, ton of bounce off the dribble, and just a bigger frame for a guard. Tough to defend due to his size but also possesses the athleticism and mechanics to get by faster defenders. Not only can he score the ball in a variety of ways, but distributes as well. Hard to tell which level he falls into but I’m optimistic he will play collegiate basketball in two years.
Elijah Mattingly Elijah Mattingly 6'6" | SF Central Christian Academy | 2022 State IN (Indiana Red Storm) 2022 6’6 SF
Mattingly was a textbook definition of a creator in Indy. Forced defenders to come out and guard him near collegiate 3PT range as he could let it fly from well beyond the arc. Knew to use his length when facing smaller defenders and backed guys down on the block. Great length for a SF and could be more dangerous as he adds to his frame. Definitely a D3 target at this time.
Darren Ames Jr. (Mac Irvin Fire) 2023 6’2 PG
Ames might be one of the best PGs I was able to see. The lefty is #2 in Prep Hoops Illinois 2023 Rankings and showed why he is an early target for D1s in the Midwest. Ames creates shots for himself and puts himself in positions to score in a variety of ways. Shot lights out against Midwest Basketball Club and proved defenders cannot allow him even the slightest bit of space. Athletic and excelled in both fast break and half court settings. Very talented PG with an extremely high ceiling.
Steve Turner Steve Turner 6'8" | C Simeon | 2023 State IL (Y&R 2023) 2023 6’8 C
Turner isn’t only on this list for scoring, but more for how he contributed to other guys scoring for Y&R. This guy is extremely big and strong. Powerful frame and greatly bigger than anyone of Team Flyght’s team in their matchup. Great movement from block to block forcing defenders to follow him. Great screen setter; firm and consistent which allowed Y&R and their many talented guards to create in pick-and-roll situations. Has to be stronger with the ball in his hands and keep the ball high, but this is an easy fix. I see him as a D2+ prospect with his size and skillset.
