While I was able to check out teams from all over the Midwest, I especially watched Ohio teams as they performed in the event. While several programs I knew many of the top names, it was some of the unknown guys that quickly caught my eyes. Here are the 5 Top New Name players from Ohio from the event.
Marquise Arnold 6’1 PG Dayton Metro- The athletic 2023 guard played up at the 17U level and showed he could handle this style of play. Fantastic athlete mainly capitalizing on dribble drive focused offense. Scored at will against Illinois Basketball Club. Explosive and hits the 2nd level after beating the initial man. Very good athlete with a chance to be a special player at Belmont come High School season.
Laron Pointer 6’4 PF Dayton Metro- Laron was one of Metro’s best interior players and had some familiarity with the guards on his team. Very good rebounding threat with his long arms and pure size. Looks like he could potentially grow a bit more between now and High School. Capitalized on the glass mainly. I’ll be curious how his role will look with Ponitz as they have a guard heavy team similar to Dayton Metro.
Michael Mussari 6’2 CG Midwest Basketball Club- Mussari has tremendous shot creation capabilities. He himself scored in a variety of ways. Beyond himself, he showed great court awareness and solid passing to setup other guys in his team. In a showdown with Mac Irvin Fire, Mussari appeared to be the only member of Midwest that came out with intensity to start this game off. If he can show some comfortability using his left hand more, he could be an intriguing prospect this upcoming High School season.
Evan Manes 5’11 SG Midwest Basketball Club- Manes made Tipp fans happy as he will be tasked with replacing a large group of seniors for the Red Devils. This weekend in Indy, he emerged as a new name for me and impressed with his sharp shooting abilities. Quick release and focused on the rim when getting his shot off. Impressed me beyond shooting once Mac Irvin began to close out more on him. Crisp passer that makes the correct basketball play. I will be intrigued to see how he continues to develop his game and add to his already impressive shooting range.
Tyrin Sturdivant 6’0 PG Team Flyght- Sturdivant was a guy I can’t believe I never had seen before this session. The Northmont junior guard has unreal quickness with the ball. Changes his speed and direction incredibly well when making a move on the perimeter. Disciplined with his decision making and even impressed with taking a charge on the defensive end. On defense, moved his feet and got side-to-side with the ball. At times dribbled a little too much against pressure but overall looks to be an early candidate for Stock Risers in Dayton.
