I saw games from players in 7 different states throughout the weekend, so in the first article of my new series, we look at the 2023 standouts from the state of Missouri for the Havoc in the Heartland in Indianapolis. Let’s get started.
Brady Bowers Brady Bowers 6'1" | PG Rock Bridge | 2023 State MO – 6’1″ PG – Missouri Elite (Rock Bridge)
Bowers was the control man for Missouri Elite in their opening game on Saturday. He showed very nice ball-handling, and his court vision on the transition break led to many buckets for his squad. His scoring ability was also one of the best on his team. He stroked four from the outside in their win, and he also was able to get in the lane and hit a nice little teardrop in the paint. He has a ton of ability, and he definitely improved his stock in this game over the weekend.
Kanyon Hummel Kanyon Hummel 6'9" | PF Rock Bridge | 2023 State MO – 6’8″ PF – Missouri Elite (Rock Bridge)
Hummel is a big man who had an outstanding game in the post on Saturday morning. He has good footwork inside and loves to hit the little 6-foot hook shot with either hand. He is also extremely physical around the rim which led to a lot of rebounds falling his way. To go with his great footwork, he had his eyes up on nearly every touch and looked for the pass out whenever doubled. Overall, it was a great start to the weekend for Hummel, and his recruitment should pick up by the end of the summer.
Brady Kuehl Brady Kuehl 6'6" | SF Parkway | 2023 State MO – 6’6″ PF – Gateway Knights (Parkway West)
Kuehl is a bigger forward who has a ton of size on the inside. This size allowed him to absolutely dominate the glass with a no doubt double-digit rebounding game. His scoring ability wasn’t quite there on the inside, but he did step out and knock down a triple in the second half. Kuehl is a big body who seems to always be in the right place on the boards, but he needs to improve his scoring from what I saw on Saturday morning in Indy.
C.J. Lang – 6’1″ PG – Gateway Knights (Webster Groves)
Lang is a bigger point guard who is just smooth at all times with the ball. He is a great ball-handler who did not turn the ball over. He also showed off nice floaters in the lane and a smooth finger roll. He always attacks the glass strong when he goes there, but he spent most of the game getting his teammates involved. On the defensive end, he had great hands and came up with a couple of deflections and steals to disrupt the opponents. Overall, he didn’t have the best looking stat line, but he was one of the main reasons that Gateway rolled to a 20-point win.
Dwight Lomax – 5’9″ PG – Rush Academy (Trinity Lutheran)
Lomax is a smaller guard who relies on his speed and quickness in his game. He was the fastest player on the court in this one with the ball in his hands, and he is a smooth finisher around the rim. He also plays very hard on the defensive end of the floor and came up with several steals with his quick hands. Despite his size, he also doesn’t hesitate to crash the boards on both ends. You will be hard-pressed to find someone who works harder than Lomax, and this hard work makes him an asset to any team.
Javaris Moye Javaris Moye 6'4" | SG Kirkwood | 2023 State MO – 6’4″ SF – Gateway Knights (Kirkwood)
Moye is a bigger wing who was one of the better athletes on the floor in this one. He does have a little bit of a hitch in his outside shot, but he knocked two down with consistency so it doesn’t seem to bother him. He can also take it to the rim and he is smooth in the paint with a nice finger roll and euro step to finish. About halfway through the second half, he also capped a 10-0 run by Gateway with a powerful transition jam right after Emerge Elite tied the game. This jam basically put the game completely out of reach. Watch for Moye’s recruitment to take off in the coming year as his athleticism alone can make a difference at the next level.
Charlie Nett – 6’1″ SG – Mo Thunder (Troy Buchanan)
Nett was absolutely on fire to start their game on Saturday morning. In the first five minutes of the game, Nett was 4-4 from the outside and helped them cruise to a 43-19 halftime lead. After this amazing shooting show, he showed off some of his other skills as well. He became much more of a pass-first player and seemed to always find the open man with his court vision. He also has silky smooth handles. This passing and shooting combo makes him a very dangerous player with the ball in his hands and he can get both he and his teammates open shots.
Kellen Rhimes – 5’10” PG – Gateway Knights (Kirkwood)
Rhimes is a smaller guard who can score it in many different ways. He is very quick with the ball in his hands, and he has enough physicality to get inside and finish through contact. He can knock shots down from the outside, but his go-to shot is a nice little pull-up floater in or just outside the paint. Kellen still has some areas to improve in his game, but he has the potential to put it all together.
Connor Rolwing – 6’1″ PG – Missouri Elite (Rock Bridge)
Rolwing is a smaller guard who uses his quickness to beat his defenders. He has a quick first step and is very smooth around the rim. He can finish with both hands and knows how to seal off the bigger defenders inside. Connor also showed pretty good court vision throughout, trying to get his teammates involved consistently. He is going to be a player for Division three coaches to keep an eye on for the future.
Brady Wolf – 5’10” SG – Mo Thunder (Orchard Farm)
Wolf is a smaller shooting guard who lit it up in the second half. He is an intelligent player who moves very well without the ball. This led to many open triples from just finding the open spot on the floor and knocking down a catch and shoot three. He is also a strong, physical guard who can fight through and finish through contact in the lane. Wolf is a talented player who coaches should keep an eye on in the future.
