I saw games from players in 7 different states throughout the weekend, so in the first article of my new series, we look at the 2023 standouts from the state of Michigan for the Havoc in the Heartland in Indianapolis. Let’s get started.
Dante Favor – 6’6″ SF – Top 1 (Canton)
Favor is an aggressive wing who can knock down shots consistently from the mid-range. He does struggle with decision-making at times and he was out of control of some of his drives. Nonetheless, he is an aggressive wing who can knock down shots, and the smaller decision type of things will come from experience. He is a player to watch as he has all of the skills to be a very impressive player in the future.
Marshaun Flakes – 6’2″ SG – B3 Athletics (East Kentwood)
Flakes was the best player on the floor in this one, and he was making plays all over the court. He has the ability to run the point, and he is incredibly smooth with the ball in his hands. His killer crossover also sent a couple of defenders flying. When around the rim, he has the ability to pull up for a nice little floater or be smooth around the rim depending on where the open space is. He sees the court well and makes sure to get his teammates open. One area of his game that could be improved is his decision-making, but his athleticism and scoring ability makes him a very impressive player to watch.
Quadir Hatchett – 5’11” PG – B3 Athletics (Wyoming)
Hatchett is a smaller guard who has a ton of length in his frame. He shot the ball great with a good mid-range and a couple of triples. He will also never hesitate to shoot as he has all of the confidence in the world. Another key thing about Quadir is that he was hustling every single second that he was on the floor. He is a coachable player who can make plays, and this makes him a player to watch for the future.
Jake Koning – 5’11” SG – B3 Athletics (Forest Hills Central)
Koning is a smaller guard who can knock down a shot from every single spot on the floor. He showed several different shots in his arsenal with a floater in the lane, solid mid-range J, and a couple of threes. He ended with 14 on the night. As a natural scorer from all areas of the floor, Coaches should keep an eye on Koning in the coming year.
Zachary Kroetsch Zachary Kroetsch 6'2" | PG Croswell-Lexington | 2023 State MI – 6’1″ PG – Michigan Cagers (Cros-lex)
Kroetsch is a smaller guard who uses his quick first step to get to the hole. He has a good floater inside, and he loves the pull-up jumper in the paint. He also runs the floor for the Michigan Cagers. He is a good facilitator and sees the court well. Kroetsch is basically the court general for this squad, and he helped them quite a bit on Saturday morning.
Levi McKenzie – 5’10” PG – B3 Athletics (Forest Hills Central)
McKenzie is a smaller guard who is very impressive in the paint and around the rim. He has good body control and has come up with several nice moves around the rim. He also knocked down the floater in the paint multiple times in this one. McKenzie is an impressive guard who can create for himself and should continue to develop his skills.
Jacer Petree – 6’2″ SG – Top 1 (East Middle School) (2025)
As an eighth-grader, Patree was making things happen despite being two years younger than everyone else on the floor. He is an outstanding three-point shooter, ad he hit three different step-back triples after shaking off the defender. In addition to his scoring ability, Patree played an unselfish game getting his teammates involved with some nice assists. Patree is going to be a player, and he should be making a lot of noise across the state in the coming years.
Jackson Reynolds Jackson Reynolds 6'2" | SG Dearborn Divine Child | 2023 State MI – 6’0″ SG – Top 1 (Divine Child)
Reynolds is a solid shooting guard who was lights out on Saturday afternoon. He is a confident shooter with a smooth stroke. He can knock it down from both the mid-range and behind the arc, but he is the best on the catch and shoot. I don’t think he missed a single shot on the catch and shoot. Watch out for Reynolds as his scoring ability makes him a very good college prospect.
Andrew Sniesak Andrew Sniesak 6'4" | PF Armada | 2023 State MI – 6’3″ SF – Michigan Cagers (Armada)
Sniesak is a smaller wing who made plays all game on Saturday morning. He goes strong to the rim, and he uses his aggressiveness to get inside and score around the rim. The bigger impact that Sniesak made for the Cagers was on the defensive end of the floor. He has very good hands on the defensive end, and he came up with a couple of very impressive blocked shots inside. He will be an interesting player to watch develop his skills over the coming years.
