I saw games from players in 7 different states throughout the weekend, so in the first article of my new series, we look at the 2023 standout shooting guards from the state of Indiana for the Havoc in the Heartland in Indianapolis. Let’s get started.
Carter Fisher – 6’3″ SG – All Area Basketball Black (Burris Laboratory School)
Fisher is a bigger shooting guard who can stroke it from the outside. He has a smooth stroke from the outside and hit three triples in the game. Carter also fought on the offensive glass in a major way. He earned his team a couple more possessions that ended up being the difference in this close game. Fisher has the size and the shooting, so if he can polish it all up, he will be a fun player to watch in the future.
Caleb Herrold Caleb Herrold 6'3" | SG Victory Christian Academy | 2023 State IN – 6’1″ SG – Indiana Game Blue (Victory Christian)
Herrold is a good shooting guard who played incredibly well in this game. He shot the ball great, and he has a ton of confidence in his shooting stroke as he never once hesitated to shoot. He also was extremely aggressive in taking the ball to the rim. He is a strong finisher and doesn’t shy from contact inside. He also puts in the dirty work by crashing the offensive glass which helped his team in a major way. Herrold had 17 in the win, and he had one of the better performances that I saw all weekend.
Kelvin Hines – 6’0″ SG – Indiana Game Grey (Gary West)
Hines is a solid guard who knows how to make plays. He has solid court vision and knows how to get his teammates involved in the game. Kelvin also looked very impressive around the rim. He has good finishing moves, and he protects the ball well on his drives. He has a ways to go in terms of development, but Hines is off to a good start.
Leon Grimes – 6’1″ SG – Indiana Game Grey (Bowman Academy)
Grimes is a guard with a lot of length and athleticism. He has very good court vision, and he hit a nice little mid-range jumper in this one. He also attacked the glass in a major way in this game. This led to several easy chances around the rim after offensive rebounds. Look for Grimes to continue to improve his shooting which will take his game to the next level.
Paul Leasure – 6’0″ SG – Indiana Attack (Rochester)
Leasure is a smaller guard who is quick with the ball, but the best part of his game has to be his ability to score and create. He is a knock-down three-point shooter. He also showed the ability to get his own shot off the dribble by either pulling up or getting to the hole. In addition to his scoring, he is;t afraid to work as he attacks the offensive glass despite the size disadvantage. It was a good opening game for Leasure for sure.
A.J. Lux A.J. Lux 6'3" | SG Crown Point | 2023 State IN – 6’3″ SG – Indiana Game Premier (Crown Point)
Lux is a very impressive shooting guard who can basically do it all and do it well. He is almost a perfect shooter on the catch and shoot as I don’t know that he missed more than one in this game. He has unlimited range and loves to create his own shot. With his shooting, he can also see the court really well which allows him to find the gaps in the defense. Lux ended with 28 in this one and was nearly unstoppable. Don’t be surprised when he is playing Division one basketball in a couple of years.
Colin McBride – 6’0″ SG – All Area Basketball Black (Burris Laboratory School)
McBride is a decent-sized guard who was very good around the rim. He is a solid finisher around the rim. He used his physicality to get into the lane with ease, and he fought through contact to finish inside. McBride didn’t show much shooting the ball, so that will be the next area of his game that I will need to see from him.
Braxten Robbins – 5’9″ SG – Miami Basketball Club (Peru)
Robbins is a smaller, southpaw guard who can make shots. He has a good shooting stroke, and although the shots just weren’t falling for him. Braxten also was able to get inside and finish through contact, and he never once shied away from contact with the bigger defenders. It wasn’t the best game from Robbins, but he has enough offensive ability.
