CHATSWORTH, Ca—Despite a resilient effort by Beverly Hills, Sierra Canyon had too much firepower as the Trailblazers cruised to an 89-69 victory. The Normans cut the lead to 9-points, due to their relentless press, but Sierra Canyon’s super junior, Amari Bailey Amari Bailey 6'4" | SF Sierra Canyon | 2022 State #2 Nation CA-S , would have none of that as he blazed to an impressive 38-point scoring output.
Shy Odom Shy Odom 6'6" | PF Sierra Canyon | 2022 State #237 Nation CA-S (Sierra Canyon)
2022, PF, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: Odom (pictured) will be critical for the Trailblazers’ run to a possible Open Division Championship as he provides an element that no one on the roster can replicate. He is a beastly interior force who plays through contact, rebounds in traffic, and has expanded his game as well. He can take defenders off the dribble and finish with either hand and he showed off a nice jump hook. If double-teamed he has the savvy to deliver the appropriate pass to an open teammate as well.
Ramel Lloyd Jr (Sierra Canyon)
2022, SG, 6-foot-6, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lloyd, whose father “Rock” had a standout career at Long Beach State, is evolving into a good all-around player himself. He is a “big” guard with good ball skills and he excels in transition. He can deliver the nifty assist or slither his way to the rim. His jump shot needs to get more consistent and his decision-making can be erratic at times, but he is definitely one of the better up-and-coming players in the West.
Theo Brockman (Beverly Hills)
2022, PF, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Brockman hit some timely shots early on in this one. He has a feathery shooting touch from deep and he has a quick release. In addition, he showed a solid burst off the dribble and tossed in a nice runner. In the half-court he shows his feel for the game as does a nice job moving without the ball and finding openings in the defense to get his shot off.
Dylan Metoyer (Sierra Canyon)
2023, PG, 5-foot-11, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: Metoyer came off the bench and did a nice job helping Bailey with the ball handling. The crafty lefty changes speed well, and a soft shooting touch from the perimeter, and can deliver the pass into the shooter’s pocket. Defensively, he played some suffocating defense on Beverly Hills stud guard Aaron Liberty.
Blake Lander Blake Lander 6'4" | SF Beverly Hills | 2021 State CA-S (Beverly Hills)
2021, PF, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lander is a jack-of-all-trades forward who can score in a variety of ways. He isn’t overly explosive, but he has a knack to score from all three levels. Whether it’s a grinding drive to the basket or nailing a mid-range jump shot, Lander is potent.
