As we build our Prospect Index, I will be doing film evaluations on every player from Nebraska who submits or claims their profile here. We will cover the first five submissions from the 2022 class to start.
Austin Holtz Austin Holtz 5'10" | CG Bennington | 2022 State NE | Bennington
Holtz led Bennington in scoring this past season with 16 points per game. He lives near the perimeter, taking nearly 60% of his shots behind the line, but he can leverage the threat of his shot to open up lanes to drive. He has a quick release and has no issue taking and making contested jumpers, so even the slighest shot fake gets the defender to bite. His footwork and handle can earn him penetration from there. He struggles to finish over length at the rim, but has a floater to counter. What impresses me most is his off-ball movement, which you can see in the clip below. Coach Olson used those strengths and ran him around every type of screen you can imagine to great offensive success.
Carlos Valdez Carlos Valdez 6'3" | SG Lincoln Northeast | 2022 State NE | Lincoln Northeast
You won’t see the junior forward playmaking or creating much offense for himself, but he proved to be a nice play finisher for the Rockets. He is reliable around the rim, and finishes well through contact. He provides consistent energy which manifests itself in extra possessions.
Casey O’Malley Casey O’Malley 6'3" | CG Creighton Prep | 2022 State NE | Creighton Prep
O’Malley is a crafty finisher. He varies the length and timing of his strides, and manipulates defenders with start and stops. He doesn’t create a ton of separation, but he has learned to finish without it. His shooting motion will prevent him from ever being a true threat from distance, but he is good enough where the defense cannot leave him wide open. His passing ability makes him a great play-connector on offense, as well.
Charlie Burt Charlie Burt 6'4" | SF Omaha Skutt | 2022 State NE | Skutt Catholic
Burt is another great mover without the basketball among this group. He does the hard work early, so when he gets the ball he has already put him in position to score. He won’t jump off the stat sheet most games, but there is positive impact on both ends whenever he is on the court.
Grant Mielak Grant Mielak 6'5" | SF Lincoln Southwest | 2022 State NE | Lincoln Southwest
As the catch and shoot assassin off the bench, Grant Mielak Grant Mielak 6'5" | SF Lincoln Southwest | 2022 State NE dealt heavy damage to unsuspecting defenses in his junior year. He has length at 6’5″ and a quick release, so defenders play a dangerous game when helping off him. He hit 41% of his three pointers, at 3.2 attempts per game. His length shows up on defense, too, in the form of shot blocks and pass deflections.
