Richmond played host to the first stop as there will be three more sessions later on. Below is part two of some takeaways during our time in the gym on Saturday. You can view part one here.
DC Premier Shows Toughness
I was lucky enough to have a front row seat for the best AAU game I have seen so far this spring in a matchup between DC Premier and Team Loaded Virginia. Team Loaded Virginia were the favorites on paper but I was very impressed with how the Premier team fought off an early ten point deficit to eventually losing by two points in overtime. The Bishop O’Connell duo of Paul Lewis Paul Lewis 6'1" | PG Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA and Cavan Reilly Cavan Reilly 6'4" | SG Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA was strong as they both played hard and scored in double digits. St. John’s forward Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'6" | SF St. John's | 2022 State #121 Nation MD led the team with 19 points and continues to trend in the right direction. 2022 Justyn Fernandez might have shown the most improvement finishing with 9 points and 6 rebounds. He can score it in a variety of ways and can guard multiple positions on defense as he is a defender who can really get after it on that end. George Mason is the latest school to offer Fernandez. If Premier plays the way they did last weekend, look for them to make some noise on the UAA circuit this summer.
Maliq Brown Maliq Brown 6'8" | PF Blue Ridge | 2022 State #123 Nation VA Criminally Underrated
I really don’t have an answer to why Maliq Brown Maliq Brown 6'8" | PF Blue Ridge | 2022 State #123 Nation VA is not talked about more on a national level but he needs to start getting more recognition. At 6’9, Brown has tremendous length that allows him to be extremely versatile on both ends. His length caused a lot of problems defensively for DC Premier as he is a prospect that will be asked to guard multiple positions at the next level and will be able to do so with no hesitation.
Blue Blood Enters The Picture For Tyler Nickel Tyler Nickel 6'8" | SF East Rockingham | 2022 State #85 Nation VA
2022 Tyler Nickel Tyler Nickel 6'8" | SF East Rockingham | 2022 State #85 Nation VA continued to show off his ability to score the basketball at a high level in Richmond last weekend. He has no trouble in adjusting to what the defense is giving him as he will find a way to get his shot off. He is smooth with the basketball and has a pure jump shot. North Carolina is the latest school to start ramping it up with Nickel in terms of recruiting.
Efrem ‘Butta’ Johnson Efrem ‘Butta’ Johnson 6'4" | NA lbs | SG Grissom | 2022 State #NA Nation AL Keeps On Improving
Johnson is another underrated prospect from the state of Virginia that coaches should be monitoring. In a blowout win against the New World B team, Johnson finished with 22 points including 12 from deep. Johnson always does a good job of constantly trying to get open as he can score from multiple spots on the floor.
Kanye Clary Kanye Clary 5'11" | PG Massanutten | 2022 State VA Runs The Show For Boo Williams
Boo Williams will be relying on Clary to run the show for them this summer as he is the lead floor general for them. He runs the offense at a high level for them making all of the right decisions as he can distribute the ball at a high level for his team. When needed to score for his team he showed he can do that finishing with 21 points in my viewing of him. Clary will be a name to remember as the summer heats up.
